With the DFL-Supercup, the first round of the DFB-Pokal, and even a game of UEFA Champions League qualifiers out of the way, the Bundesliga is about to kick off with a jam-packed weekend of great fixtures. So, who looks to sit atop the table after the opening weekend? Friday, August 18 Last season, Bayern Munich obliterated the competition by winning the Bundesliga by 15 points and a goal difference superior by 50 goals to second place. They’re an incredibly dominant force in Germany, and indeed the European stage, and are 6/25 to get a win on the opening night of the season. Bayer Leverkusen, who rock a pretty strong team themselves, drew the short straw and will have to face the champions in the opening game of the season. As good as Bayer Leverkusen are, Bayern Munich became even stronger by signing the likes of Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez over the summer, as well as making the Kingsley Coman deal permanent, so they should win this game with ease. Saturday, August 19 After a difficult first game in the Champions League playoffs against Premier League club Liverpool, Hoffenheim will hope to get their domestic campaign off to a good start against Werder Bremen, and are 4/5 to do so. Hamburger SV host Augsburg in what looks to be a close game, with a draw set at 9/4 in the odds, while Hertha Berlin and VfB Stuttgart are also expected to engage in a close game. Hannover 96 go to play Mainz 05 but aren’t expected to come away with the victory, while travellers Borussia Dortmund – who came third last season – should beat VfL Wolfsburg to round-out the earlier Saturday games. In the evening, the most closely contested game of the weekend takes place: both Schalke 04 and last season’s runners-up, RB Leipzig, are rated at 8/5 to get the win in the late kick-off. Sunday, August 20 In the earlier Sunday game, Eintracht Frankfurt make their way over to SC Freiburg, with the home team slightly favoured to take all three points at 11/8. Then, to finish up the opening week of Bundesliga football, Borussia Monchengladbach host FC Koln in a game that they’re anticipated to win, with the home team at just below evens, 23/25. Bayern Munich are expected to start the season where they intend to finish up, at the very top, so which other Bundesliga hopefuls will be joining them with three points?
