Arsenal Need to Bounce Back from Stoke Disappointment at Anfield
“Typical Arsenal” was the phrase uttered by many Gunners fans who left the bet365 Stadium shaking their head in disbelief on Saturday, August 19. After a bright start to the campaign, which saw them narrowly edge out Leicester in 4-3 thriller, Arsene Wenger’s side failed to hit the target in Staffordshire.
The visitors missed several chances to take at least a point from the game, with Danny Welbeck spurning the best of the opportunities in the second half. Summer signing Alexandre Lacazette did find the back of the net but was dismayed to see the assistant referee’s flag adjudging him to be in an offside position. Arsene Wenger wasn’t happy at the decision and is adamant his side should have left with at least a point but his anger can’t mask the fact that his side were below average on the day.
The Gunners are 12/5 with Betfred to pick up all three points against Liverpool on August 27 in the 4 PM kickoff, but they need to offer more in the final third if they are to collect three points on Merseyside.
Welbeck came in for the majority of the criticism from the visiting supporters but many of the players, including Granit Xhaka, put in underwhelming performances and appeared to lack ideas.
Liverpool narrowly squeezed past Crystal Palace in their second Premier League game and will once again be without wantaway midfielder Phillipe Coutinho for this tie, although summer recruit Mo Salah is likely to be included in the starting XI.
The Reds always seem to raise their game against better opposition and did the double over Arsene Wenger’s side last season including a thrilling 4-3 victory 12 months ago at the Emirates and if Arsenal don’t improve immeasurably in this fixture they are in danger of extending their winless run against Liverpool to five games.
