Who Will Win the 2021 Stanley Cup

All Canadian division possible for upcoming NHL season

The Colorado Avalanche have emerged as the favourites to win the Stanley Cup (+522 Sports Interaction). While the Avalanche have done nothing but impress, I would argue that there are more deserving favourites. To be the best you have to beat the best, and the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights are once again near the top of the NHL Standings. Tampa is looking to defend their title and Vegas aims to avenge their 2018 Cup Final loss, these two could meet in a terrific Cup Final.

1. Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning

Why are they here?

The Lightning may not win the Central Division, but they will get a huge boost come playoffs when Nikita Kucherov returns. Already averaging 3.38 goals per game, Tampa Bay’s offense would become arguably the best in the league by gaining Kucherov for the playoffs.

Last week’s recap:

After an up-down week, the Lightning got back on track going 4-0 this week as they grabbed all 8 points against the Blue Jackets x2, the Blackhawks and the Stars. The Lightning offense is humming with 17 goals in their last 4 games.

Upcoming  games:

  1. Lightning at Red Wings May 1st & May 2nd @3pm EST – To win the Central Division, Tampa Bay needs to bank easy points and would significantly benefit from a weekend sweep over the Detroit Red Wings.
  2. Lightning vs Stars May 5th & May 7th @7pm EST – The Lightning host the Stars in a Stanley Cup Final rematch, already 5-1 in the season series, Tampa Bay will look to continue their dominance over Dallas.

Spot on:

Keep an eye on Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is having a career year at 30-8-1 with a career-low 2.10 G.A.A. and a career-high .929 save percentage. The Lightning will be the favourites if the Russian netminder remains this sharp.

2. Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas Golden Knights

Why are they here?

Back and arguably better than ever, Vegas allows a league-low 2.16 goals against per game, while owning an 86.7% penalty kill. Defense wins Stanley Cups and Vegas knows it.

Last week’s recap:

The Knights continued their impressive win streak by claiming back-back victories over the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks. They followed that up by picking up a huge win over the Avalanche, but lost their 10-game win streak to the Yotes.

Upcoming  games:

  1. Golden Knights at Coyotes May 1st @10pm EST – Vegas is catching a desperate Coyote team at the right time as they are slumping. Vegas has dismantled the Yotes this season going 5-2 against Arizona.
  2. Golden Knights at Wild May 3rd & May 5th @8pm EST – The Wild and Knights could meet in the playoffs (most likely in Round 2), in what would be a tight-checking series. Minnesota has owned Vegas, the Knights have lost 4 of 6 against the Wild. However, a strong set against Minny could lock up the West Division and help Vegas build momentum.

Spot on:

Mark Stone has recorded 14 points in his last 9 games. The Golden Knights Captain is enjoying a career-best year with 56 points in 48 games.

3. Washington Capitals

Washington Capitals

Why are they here?

The Washington Capitals have the best offense in the NHL. They lead the league with 122 goals at 5v5 and arguably have the best 2nd line in the league with Nick Backstrom, TJ Oshie and Anthony Mantha terrorizing defenses.

Last week’s recap:

The Caps cleaned up on Long Island, taking both games from the Islanders and then grabbed a point against Pittsburgh.

Upcoming  games:

  1. Capitals vs Penguins May 1st @7pm EST – An important game for seeding purposes, the Capitals look to vanquish their biggest rival on Saturday. In a razor tight series this season, Pittsburgh has held serve winning 5 of 7.
  2. Capitals at Rangers May 3rd & 5th @7pm EST – The Rangers are on their last legs and Washington will look to put them away next week. The Caps will hope their recent success will turn the tides on Broadway as they have won only 2 of 6 against NYR this season.
  3. Capitals vs Flyers May 7th @7pm EST – The Capitals week will come to a close with a game against the hapless Flyers who have freefalled to the cellar of the East Division. Look for Washington to bank free points against Philly, who they have won 5 straight against.

Spot on:

Anthony Mantha exploded onto the scene in Washington scoring a goal in each of his first 4 games for the Capitals. He has cooled off as of late, but I would not expect that to last, Mantha is the X-Factor of this Caps team.

4. Florida Panthers

Florida Panthers

Why are they here?

The value on the Cats is pretty wild. Florida has been stride for stride with Carolina and Tampa Bay this year, yet are 20/1 to win the Cup. Inexperience is part of it, but with Joel Quenneville behind the bench, I love Florida’s number.

Last week’s recap:

An intense week saw the Panthers take down the Hurricanes in overtime, but then drop a disappointing game to the Preds. They made up for that by defeating Nashville 7-4 and Chicago 4-3. They are now 2 points back of Carolina.

Upcoming  games:

  1. Panthers at Blackhawks May 1st @8pm EST – The Panthers are due for a lot of rest this week and are running out of games to bank points. Alexsander Barkov has dominated the Hawks this year scoring 9 points in 5 games.
  2. Panthers vs Stars May 3rd @7pm EST – The Stars are fighting for their playoff lives, while Florida is battling for the division crown. The Panthers have owned Dallas winning 5 of 7 against the Stars. Goalie Chris Driedger has recorded a .945 save percentage versus Dallas this season.

Spot on:

MacKenzie Weegar has exploded this year. Despite losing Aaron Ekblad, Weegar has looked like a legitimate top pairing defenseman and chipped in offensively recording 32 points, in what has been his best season as a pro.

5. Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche

Why are they here?

The only reason Colorado is not ranked higher is that their value is not great. Colorado may be the deepest team in the league and took Dallas to the limit in last year’s Western Semi-Finals. This team’s fate will be decided by their goaltending.

Last week’s recap:

After a 5-game winning streak, the Avs had a bad week going 1-3 by dropping a pair to the Blues, then losing to Vegas, but finally getting a win against San Jose. Every team has an off week, do not let this streak fool you, Colorado is for real.

Upcoming  games:

  1. Avalanche vs Sharks May 1st @8pm EST, Avalanche at Sharks May 3rd @10:30pm EST & May 5th @9:30pm EST – The Avalanche’s recent slump should be counteracted by a foursome of games against the Sharks. Colorado has taken 4 of 5 match-ups against San Jose this season, winning all four games by 3+ goals.
  2. Avalanche vs Kings May 7th @10pm EST – The Avalanche will head from San Jose down to Los Angeles, where they will meet the lowly Kings who are wrapping up their disappointing regular-season. The Avalanche have beat L.A. in 3 of 4 match-ups this season, and will likely add to that number.

Spot on:

Philipp Grubauer is enjoying a stellar campaign sitting at 27-8-1 with a .922 save percentage and a G.A.A. of 1.94.. However, according to advanced stats, much of Grubauer’s success has come from Colorado’s team defense. Can Grubauer prove pundits wrong and backstop this team to a Stanley Cup?

Bet on Colorado to Win the Stanley Cup (+522 SIA)

Our Prediction

My BettingTop10 prediction has the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights meeting in the Stanley Cup Final. These two teams are the strongest and most experienced teams in my opinion. The Lightning have won the Stanley Cup and have reinforcements on the way, hungry to repeat. Vegas has gotten so close twice, but came up short. They have what it takes to get back to the Final. In what should be an epic series, my best bet is to bet on the Lightning (+750 888Sport) to win the Stanley Cup.
