UEFA Super Cup: Real Madrid Too Strong for Manchester United?
Manchester United will face Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday evening (August 8th) and the Red Devils will need to be at their brilliant best to contain Zinedine Zidane’s side. With Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale firing on all cylinders, Los Blancos are likely to put United under intense pressure in Skopje.
Even without former Red Devils star Cristiano Ronaldo, set to miss the game after Madrid opted to give the Portuguese an extended break, Real are blessed with attacking talent and Zidane will be confident that his side can do the business.
At 19/20 to emerge victorious with bookmakers including bet365, the Champions League holders represent solid value. Madrid were by far the better side when defeating Juventus in May’s final whilst United were also a class above Ajax in the Europa League showpiece.
Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s men will be keen to record another impressive pre-season win as they continue to build momentum ahead of the Premier League campaign. United have won six of their seven fixtures so far this summer and defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic, a recent acquisition from Chelsea, should free up Paul Pogba.
Pogba came under scrutiny last season after failing to live up to his £89 million price tag but Matic’s arrival will encourage the Frenchman to focus on going forward. With Matic and fan favourite Ander Herrera holding down the fort, Pogba can link up with Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford in attack.
In recent years, United have struggled to inspire confidence against Europe’s elite clubs and the Red Devils will be up against it here. Madrid’s midfield might be too strong for United if Zidane goes for a full strength unit.
Mourinho is likely to adopt a defensive approach and the onus will be on Madrid to break United down. It might not be completely one-sided but Los Blancos should have enough to keep their English opponents at bay.
