The opening weekend of the Premier League sees Spurs host Championship playoff winners Aston Villa at their new stadium.
Tottenham have won their last three games against Aston Villa by two goals and there is a good possibility of that happening again in this one. The odds for Spurs to win the match outright don’t have much value in them, so instead look to back the home side to win by two goals.
TOTTENHAM TO WIN BY 2 GOALS
Villa’s defence will be severely tested by Tottenham’s experienced and devasting frontline who smashed in 103 goals in all competitions last season, so goals are expected.
MATCH TO END WITH MORE THAN 3.5 GOALS
Harry Kane managed to score 17 times in just 27 starts in an injury interrupted season last term, the year before he hit 30 as he finished two behind top goal scorer Mo Salah. However, Kane’s last Premier League goal came back in March in a 2-1 defeat away to Southampton and he will want to get back on the scoresheet as soon as possible.
KANE TO SCORE THE FIRST GOAL
Villa will need time for their new players to gel and get up to the pace of the Premier League, and this game could potentially have come along at the worst possible time for them. Tottenham’s attacking quality should prove to be too much for the visitors to cope with and a high scoring game is likely outcome. The best sites offer good odds for a 3-1 win for the home team.
TOTTENHAM TO WIN 3-1
Head to Head
These sides last met in the FA Cup third round in 2017 and Spurs ran out 2-0 winners at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham have won each of the last three meetings between the teams by two goals. The Lilywhites have the better of the historical head to head, winning 63 times compared to Villa’s 49 victories, meanwhile there have been 32 draws.
Tottenham have only lost once in their last eight home games against Aston Villa, which was a 1-0 defeat in the Premier League in 2015.
Tottenham finished in fourth last season with 71 points, winning 23 games, but losing 13 times, five more defeats than Chelsea who finished one place and one point above them.
Aston Villa returned to the top-flight after three seasons being on the outside looking in by finishing fifth in the Championship on 76 points. A 2-1 defeat of Derby County in the playoff final saw the Villains seal promotion.
Villa had the third best attack in the Championship last season, scoring 82 times, nine behind champions Norwich and five less than West Brom.
Tottenham to win the match
Tottenham will want to kick off their league campaign with a home win and exorcize the ghost of losing the Champions League Final to Liverpool in their last competitive outing. Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be hoping to finish higher up the table than they did last season. New signing Tanguy Ndombele could be set to make his debut in the middle of the park.
For Aston Villa, this match is a welcome return to the top tier and while they have spent a considerable amount in the transfer market this summer, Spurs should still have too much for them. Harry Kane should be fit to start after recovering from his injury that saw him miss the tail end of last season.
