The dysfunctional Timberwolves continue their tour of disappointment on Wednesday, traveling to Los Angeles to face off with a Lakers team hungry for a win.

The Timberwolves sit at 4-6 on the season, but it feels so much worse. The Jimmy Butler saga has seeped into the regular season, bestowing a cancerous situation over the Minnesota organization. Butler has recently stepped away from the team, and likely will not return to the court until he is traded. To add to the disastrous T’Wolves season, they are also coming of a 111-81 shellacking at the hands of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers are coming off a loss that, quite frankly, everyone saw coming. See, the Lakers are who we thought they were. Los Angeles is a young, incomplete team, who will only prevail victorious against stellar competition if LeBron decides to throw the adolescent Lakers over his shoulder for that given night. The Lakers now stand at 4-6 on the season, and are currently out of the playoff picture. They will likely be clawing for the 7th or 8th spot towards the end of the year, and games like Wednesday’s, are games that they must capitalize on if they have any hopes of making a late season playoff push.

Minnesota must enter the game featuring Karl-Anthony Towns. Los Angeles has struggled covering stretch fours all season long, and most recently surrendered 34 points to the Raptors’ Serge Ibaka, on Sunday night. Defensively, Minnesota has had their faults covering guards and forwards. We all know the defensive mismatches LeBron imposes, but he won’t be the only Lakers’ scorer to keep an eye on. The refined play of Kyle Kuzma will be evident on Wednesday night. Look for Kuzma to improve on his 49.0 shooting percentage from the field, helping his team to their 5th victory on the season.

Score prediction: Lakers win 109-98

Betting Tips

  • Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers: Take Lakers (SU)

The T’Wolves are drama filled, they’re missing their best player, and they have lost the past two games by a combined total of 47 points. This may only be the start of a disappointing and tumultuous season in Minnesota. The Lakers at least have promise, and their continued improved play of their youth (Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, and Lonzo Ball) alongside LeBron, gives the City of Angels reasons to feel optimistic for their Lakers team. The Lakers will impose too many defensive mismatches with their length of LeBron and Ingram.

  • Over/Under

Both, the Lakers and the Timberwolves have struggled stopping anyone defensively this season, as they both rank no higher than 24th in defensive ppg. Problem is, both teams offensive output averaged together comes out to 114.9 ppg. Both teams are coming off games where they scored their lowest total on the season, with the T’Wolves pitching in with an abysmal 81 points. Unless Derrick Rose comes through with another 50 point shocker, it’s hard to see where the points will come from.

Head to Head

These two teams have had matchups 111 times throughout the years. Los Angeles owns the series lead 77-34.  Minnesota however took the “W” in Los Angeles earlier this season, along with all four meetings from a season ago.

  • Minnesota is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss.
  • Minnesota is 8-22 ATS in their last 30 road games.
  • Minnesota is 4-6 SU this season.
  • Los Angeles is 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games.
  • Los Angeles is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games when coming off of a game where they surrendered 100 points or more.
  • Los Angeles is 4-6 SU this season.
