What is the Stanley Cup?
The Stanley Cup 2016 was won by the Pittsburgh Penguins who defeated the San Jose Sharks in the final. The same team made it back-to-back Stanley Cup successes in 2017.
2017 but they have had a poor season this year and are unlikely to retain their title this time around. Whilst the latest franchise to join the league, the Vegas Golden Knights have looked very dangerous this season, the togetherness and defensive strength of the Nashville Predators gives them an excellent chance of glory this time around.
Unfortunately, it was a bad year for Canadian NHL with none of the seven teams qualifying for post-season after overseeing disappointing campaigns.
In 2018, Toronto Maple Leafs have been much improved and they sit towards the top end of the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, the Calgary Flames bad run of form at the start of the year coupled with their low points tally could see them miss out on the post-season showdown.

Which teams are in contention for the Stanley Cup 2017-2018
The 31st franchise team will enter the National Hockey League this year with the Vegas Golden Knights embarking on a debut season and they begin with a trip to face the Dallas Stars. Each of the 31 teams will play in every single one of the 31 arenas at least once during the course of the regular hockey season.
The teams are split into separate divisions with Canadian NHL sides such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens pitched alongside the Buffalo Sabres and the Florida Panthers in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
There are eight teams in each division but only seven in the Central Division of the Western Conference. Tampa Bay Lightning who endured a difficult season last time out and failed to reach the finals are priced up favourably for the Stanley Cup 2017/2018 but they will need to display significant improvement this time around.
Canadian NHL teams such as Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames didn’t progress to the finals 2017 and are once again not expected to prevail this time around.

Most Canadian online sportsbooks will have odds for the Stanley Cup 2017/2018 and will update them throughout the NHL season. Sports Interaction and Bodog Sports are two of the best options for Canadian NHL bettors as they have a large number of markets priced up on a weekly basis.

Stanley Cup outright markets are available whilst bettors are also able to wager on which sides will make the play-offs. For the final, markets such as puck lines are available.
These are usually set at -1.5/+1.5. For example if you’d placed a wager on Pittsburgh Penguins -1.5 Puck Line against the Nashville Predators, this would have landed as they won 2-0. Other scores which would have landed this wager include 3-1, 4-2 or 5-2. Over/Under markets are another popular market and are available for punters who wish to predict a low-scoring or high-scoring encounter.
Prop betting is a popular way of wagering on particular players to score in a match or who will be the Stanley Cup MVP (Most Valuable Players).
Stanley Cup 2017/2018 Odds
The sports betting market for the Stanley Cup is often priced up at the end of June, just weeks after the final has taken place.
Champions Pittsburgh Penguins were installed as the pre-season favourites in the futures markets but the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs are quietly fancied in the betting odds. The Maple Leafs are sixth favourites for Stanley Cup success in 2018 at +1400 with Bodog Sports.
Intertops have priced up Tampa Bay Lightning as 6.50 to win the Stanley Cup following a good run of form which has seen them win 30 of their first 53 matches adding a further six successes in overtime. The Boston Bruins who have kept the Eastern Conference competitive at the top have been priced up at +900 with William Hill as they aim to pick up their seventh Stanley Cup.
Every sportsbook will have their odds for the Stanley Cup priced up and available in their NHL futures section.
Stanley Cup Predictions
It is very rare for sides to win three consecutive Stanley Cups and many pundits predicted that the Pittsburgh Penguins dominance will come to an end in 2018. It hasn’t been smooth-sailing for the champions and they appear to be on the verge of surrendering their title.
The Vegas Golden Knights weren’t fancied to make the end of season play-offs but they have surprised many this season and look in decent shape. At +800 with William, they could be a decent bet for those who wish to oppose the favourite.
Defensively, the Boston Bruins have been excellent this year and that could be a vitally important factor in the knock-out stage of the campaign. Keeping a tight defence can often be the key to success and they look a decent proposition at +9.00 with Intertops. Bodog Sports have the Toronto Maple Leafs at +1400 for success this year and their young squad has surprised many teams this season but reaching the Stanley Cup final could be a step too far.
They are a tempting +700 to usurp Tampa Bay Lightning and clinch the Eastern Conference however.
Stanley Cup Betting Tips
Always look for a side with a winning mentality and one who don’t crumble when the pressure begins to accumulate. Younger sides can often embark upon decent runs throughout the NHL season but can often feel the heat against more experienced sides who possess a savvy streak.
In the Stanley Cup final itself, it’s always advised to wager on low scoring 1st third as neither side will wish to show their hand early with so much at stake! Pressure games such as the finals in 2017 are often low-scoring, nervy affairs.
NHL Stanley Cup Betting Trends
Most NHL fans betting on the Stanley Cup tend to look for a team who have momentum coming into the play-offs. Any side who has taken their foot off the gas towards the end of the regular season having already secured their place in the end-of-season showdown risks getting caught out. Some sides embark upon a terrific run of form from February onwards, staking a late claim for a play-off spot and these can often be popular in the market. Squads with experience are also key. Any team with too many younger, inexperienced players may lack the know-how to close out a game and this could be the difference between making it into the Stanley Cup final or just falling short.
In recent years, bettors have tended to wager on the side who have a decent record in the knock-out format of the game and the team which have the highest number of players who have previously appeared in the Stanley Cup final.
Stanley Cup futures
Stanley Cup future markets are available all year round. These include the winner of the Stanley Cup, which features every single team until it is mathematically impossible to secure a play-off position. There are also futures markets available for each of the Western and Eastern Conferences. This simply required bettors to predict which side will finish top of the standings once the regular season has been completed.
Once the play-offs get underway, it is possible to predict which two teams will compete in the Stanley Cup final and this market is always extremely popular with NHL fans.
Stanley Cup Money Line
This is the simplest market for NHL bettors. Money line wagering is simply a question of predicting which of the two participants will be victorious in the Stanley Cup final. Many games during the regular season are priced up as one-sided events but this end-of-season event is usually a hugely competitive event and it is possible to find value in this market.
Stanley Cup Puck Lines
For those bettors who are seeking more value, the Stanley Cup puck lines are an excellent way of getting involved. These offer an alternative to the money line and offer a +/- advantage or disadvantage to either side. For those who believe one side will dominate and win easily, they can be backed -1.5 and they must win by two clear points in order for this bet to land. +1.5 offers the underdog a chance to prevail and even if they lose by a single point, you will still get paid out. These are ideal for competitive, tricky looking games which can often occur in the Stanley Cup.
What does the NHL Schedule look like?
The new National Hockey League season begins on October 4th with a hectic schedule of 1,721 matches played throughout the season as a number of sides do battle for a place in the end of season play-offs and a chance to get their hands on the Stanley Cup 2017/2018. The NHL season takes a short break in January as a number of the top players gather for the All-Star event in Tampa. The Play-Offs will run from April to June with the Stanley Cup being awarded to the winner.
