Predictions & Betting Tips
Defending champion “Thug” Rose Namajunas has spent over a year on the sidelines, and faces a tough challenge in the second defence of her title. Jessica “Bate Estaca” Andrade is a huge puncher, and boasts breathtaking power for the 115-pound division. There’s also the small matter of the #1 challenger’s home advantage, and the crowd in Rio will do their best to make that count.
Bate Estaca comes into this weekend’s contest on the back of a three-fight winning streak, the third time she’s managed that in the UFC. She lost a title fight to Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 211 but has come back strongly and knocked out Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 228 in September.
Andrade has gone 6-1 since dropping down to straw 115 pounds from bantamweight. She’s lost little of her power with the weight cut, and that makes her really dangerous in this bout. However, Namajunas is also a fine striker, relying more on her movement and precision to do the damage though, with both fighters preferring to stay on their feet rather than taking things to the ground.
Another of the champion’s biggest strengths is her fight IQ, which she showed in her back-to-back victories over Joanna Jedrzejczyk. If she can work out Andrade’s game plan early on and avoid those big punches, we could see the challenger getting more and more wild the deeper we get into the bout. Andrade will hold the advantage if she can turn it into a slug fest, but Namajunas has the edge if this plays out as a tactical striking contest.
If the fight isn’t going to plan for Bate Estaca, the Brazilian could try to take it to the canvas. One of Namajunas’s few weaknesses is her wrestling skills, and she could find herself in bottom position if Andrade can use her grappling up against the fence. Having said that, Thug’s long limbs and dynamic submissions means she remains a real danger even on her back.
