The Raptors take their first place record on the road to Utah, where the Jazz continue to underwhelm.

Is this the year the Raptors are taken seriously as true title contenders? The simple answer would be yes. The acquisition of Kawhi Leonard has taken the team to new levels and given Toronto a certified superstar. Leonard’s stellar play on both sides of the court has shown in the stat sheet. The Raptors currently rank top 7 in both offensive ppg, and defensive ppg. That kind of balanced output is good enough to compete with any team, day in, and day out.

The Jazz are returning home from a three game skid. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Donovan Mitchell tweaked an ankle the other night, and is questionable for Monday’s game. The lack of a second go-to scorer has handicapped Utah’s offense all season, and will continue to be an issue vs. Toronto, especially if Mitchell can’t go.

Utah is very strong down low defending the post. The combination of Rudy Gobert, Derrick Favors, and other big men, should be able to slow down Toronto big man Jonas Valanciunas. Valanciunas has impressed over the past two games, scoring a combined 39 points in those outings. While players such as Gobert will strive defending Valanciunas in the post, Serge Ibaka, Toronto’s stretch four, will do exactly what his position entails, and stretch the floor. Utah’s slow-footed big men will struggle to defend the arc, and in the midst, surrender back door passes to cutting wings like Kawhi.

Score prediction: Raptors win 114-109

Betting Tips

  • Toronto Raptors at Utah Jazz: Take Raptors (SU)

Utah has been a major disappointment since coming off a playoff appearance a season ago. The Jazz will rely on their 8th ranked defense to keep them in the game. Yet the lack of any offense to speak of will ultimately result in the Jazz falling short. Toronto, one of the league’s most well rounded teams, should defensively corral the Jazz’s inept offense.

  • Over/Under

The Jazz rank 19th in offensive points per game, and will struggle to string along productive offensive production against a Toronto defense that surrenders the 6th least points per game on the season. Kawhi and Kyle Lowry will be racking up points for Toronto’s 7th ranked scoring offense, but the possible omission of Donovan Mitchell will greatly reduce the amount of scoring in the contest.

Head to Head

These two teams have played a total of 43 regular season games. The Utah Jazz hold the series lead with a 27-16 record. Utah and Toronto split their season series a year ago, with Utah taking the most recent game with a 97-93 victory in Toronto.
