Porto lost 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie in Rome and will be looking to turn the game around at home here in the Estadio Do Dragao.

Porto were top of the Primeira Liga going into this weekend’s upcoming title shootout with rivals Benfica who sit just one point behind them in the table – and have lost just twice in the league all season.  The Portuguese were outplayed for large parts of the first leg but managed to get themselves an away goal to keep the tie alive.

Roma are fifth in the Serie A table sitting just one point behind in form Milan in the battle for the top four and are unbeaten in their last eight league games. The Giallorossi were good value for their win in the first leg and had 19-year-old wonderkid Nicolo Zaniolo to thank for scoring the goals that gives them the edge heading into this fixture.

Porto finished top in their Champion’s League group with 16 points ahead of Schalke, Galatasaray and Locomotive Moscow – The Portuguese side managed to find the back of the net 15 times in their six games which was the joint third highest return in the group stage.

Roma came second behind holders Real Madrid in their Champion’s League group but ahead of Viktoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow – the Giallorossi managed to score eight times but five of those goals came in one game against Viktoria Plzen. A 2-2 draw could be in the offing.

Betting Tips

Porto and Roma to draw

  • Roma went on a great run to the Semi Finals last season before losing to Liverpool and could have enough experience in their line up to get the job done here in Porto.

Total goals over

  • Both these teams will go into this game confident of beating the other and we could witness a high scoring shootout as both teams go all out for the win – Roma will know that all they have to do is match what Porto do and that might be why the bookmakers are offering decent odds on the over/under.

Head to Head

These teams had met twice before the first leg in Rome two weeks ago – in 2016 they faced each other in the Champions League Playoff, the Italians drew 1-1 in Portugal in the first leg before imploding at home in the second. Daniele De Rossi and Emerson Palmieri were sent off as Porto recorded a 3-0 win.

  • Porto have won three on the bounce since losing in Rome and their only other loss in their last 30 matches was a penalty shootout defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Taca De Liga
  • Roma have gone on a five-game unbeaten run since being hammered 7-1 by Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia at the end of January – winning four and drawing once against Milan in Serie A.
  • Porto last won the Champions League in 2004 and it is unlikely that they will repeat that feat this season, but they will be keen to emulate their quarter final appearances from the last two seasons.
  • Roma’s run to the semi-finals last year were their first appearances in the business end of the competition since their final loss to Liverpool on penalties back in 1984. A 2-2 draw here would put the Italians well on their way to repeating last year’s run.
