Two top-six teams in the Western Conference battle it out Thursday night, as the 4-1 Pelicans take on the 3-2 Trail Blazers.

The Pelicans are coming off their first loss on the season, and a disappointing one at that, with 132-111 defeat at the hands of the Utah Jazz. Still, the Pelicans have been one of the most impressive teams in all of basketball. Anthony Davis has been his usual incredible self, averaging an impressive 27 and 13 on the season. Jrue Holiday has continued thriving by playing off the ball, as opposed to playing on the ball, as he had done much of his career before becoming a Pelican. Guard/Forward E’Twaun Moore has exceeded everyone’s expectations by averaging 13 ppg, a six-point jump from his career average.

While Jusuf Nurkic has been impressive down low, averaging a double-double on the year, the Trail Blazers still continue to lean heavily on their star studded backcourt. Most notably, Damian Lillard, who is averaging an absurd 33.8 ppg this season, a frustrating 0.1 behind the league leader Steph Curry. Lillard and his running mate, CJ McCollum (19.8 ppg), should have big nights against a Pelicans team that had struggled mightily against the Utah Jazz backcourt over the weekend. The Pelicans surrendering 50 combined points to Donovan Mitchell, and Ricky Rubio that night. Yes, you read that correctly, RICKY RUBIO!

Pelican’s point guard Elfrid Payton is currently dealing with an ankle injury, and there is a possibility he may not be ready to go on Thursday. If Payton can’t go, that leaves the Pels with Holiday, and basically not much else, to take on ball handling duties. The Trail Blazers possess the home court advantage and the more steady backcourt.

Score prediction: Trail Blazers Win 127-124

Betting Tips

  • Take Trail Blazers (SU)

The Pelicans are dealing with injuries, and are also struggling with defending both point guards and shooting guards. Damian Lillard may be the hottest scorer in the league at the moment, and he’s getting the 27th worst defense in the NBA. Lillard may go for 40, shoot, he may even go for 50 if things go smoothly.

  • Over/Under

New Orleans and Portland rank one and two, respectively, in offensive ppg on the season. The score board may not be able to handle the numbers that will be put up on Thursday night.

Head to Head

Portland owns a 30-25 record over New Orleans. These two teams split their four matchups from a season ago down the middle at 2-2.  The Pelicans have gone 5-3 against the Trail Blazers over the past two years.

  • The total has gone OVER all of Portland’s past 5 games.
  • Portland is 4-10 SU in its last 14 games.
  • Portland is 3-6 ATS in its last 9 games.
  • New Orleans is 15-4 ATS in its last 19 games.
  • New Orleans is 13-6 SU in its last 19 games on the road.
