Patriots vs Giants: Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips
Thursday, August 30th, 7:00pm Eastern Time
Patriots travel to New York to face their Super Bowl kryptonite, the New York Giants, on the last night of preseason.
Don’t be surprised to see Julian Edelman get some playing time for New England in hopes of keeping him sharp before he serves his four-game suspension. While Edelman may get some snaps, the team will be more focused on finding playmakers to replace him with during his absence. With Kenny Britt cut and Eric Decker calling it a career, the onus might fall on Cordarelle Patterson. Patterson has shown glimpses of life this preseason, and recently saw 9 targets from Brady in last Friday’s outing at Carolina.
In the backfield it sounds like Jeremy Hill escaped an injury scare last week, and will look to continue on his strong preseason and lockdown a roster spot.
The Giants will look to build off their strong victory in the “MetLife Bowl” a week ago. Wide Receiver Cody Latimer, who hauled in a 54-yard heave from Eli Manning in the victory, is battling for a starting gig in three receiver sets. On the defensive side of the ball, keep an eye on Lorenzo Carter. The 3rd round pick out of Georgia may need to come along quicker than anticipated as starting outside linebacker Oliver Vernon was carted off the practice field on Sunday with an ankle injury.
New England is a team that digs deeper into the roster than any team in football, because they constantly change personnel based on matchups. So while the Giants will roll out mostly backups and camp bodies, Patriots will be playing with people that they will rely on heavily come the regular season.
Score prediction: Patriots win 28-24
- Patriots at Giants (-3): Patriots
Look for the Pats to see what they have in the likes of Patterson and fellow receiver Phillip Dorsett as they will be depended on come week 1. Jeremy Hill and Mike Gillislee will battle it out for the last running back spot.
The Patriots will be playing players that will see legitimate action comes the regular season, while the Giants will be playing guys who likely won’t be on their roster a week from now. Giving the Pats 3 points seems like a hell of a bargain.
- Over/Under 38.5pts. – Over
The Giants have really picked it up the last two weeks on offense after looking abysmal week 1. Davis Webb has settled into the backup gig behind Eli Manning, and should see lots of playing time. Look for Webb and his big arm to connect on enough big plays to keep the score high.
Add that to the fact that New England has averaged over 25 pts. per game this preseason, and I’m taking the over.
Head to Head
The Patriots have the edge in head to head games over the last ten, with a 5-3 record, but the Giants have the edge where it counts, as they are 2-0 in Super Bowl matchups.
- Over the last 10 Meetings the teams have averaged a combined score over 42 pts.
- WR Cordarelle Patterson leads NE in receptions (11), yards (126), & receiving TDs (1) this preseason.
- Patriots have 11 sacks this preseason while only giving up 2.
- NYG Hunter Sharp returned a 55 yd. punt return for a TD a week ago.
- NE Jeremy Hill has rushed for 107 yds. & 1 TD on 26 carries this preseason.
- Both teams are 2-1 this preseason.
