Marin Cillic Aiming to Clinch Just His Second Grand Slam Title

Marin Cillic

Marin Cillic

Marin Cillic came into the tournament as the sixth seed and was considered an ‘outside chance’ for the first Grand Slam of the season. Cillic’s record has been patchy but he has hung around the top 10 of the ATP rankings for a number of years now and can probably be considered unfortunate to have played in the same era as the peerless foursome of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.

Those players have dominated the game for a while, making it difficult for the 29-year-old to get a look in. He came up against the latter in the Quarter-Finals of this tournament, progressing at the expense of the Spaniard, who was forced to retire through injury.

Cillic has just one Grand Slam triumph to his name, having beaten Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the 2014 US Open final, although he also finished runner-up to Roger Federer at Wimbledon last year. After deposing the potentially dangerous Kyle Edmund 6-2, 7-6, 6-2 in the Semi-Final, he booked himself a place in the showpiece event in Melbourne, where he is likely to come up against the ageless Swiss star once again.

A Tough Tournament

It’s been a tricky tournament for a number of top players with many games played in boiling temperatures, which has left plenty of competitors feeling exhausted and unwell following their matches. Alize Cornet is just one of the players who almost fainted, whilst the aforementioned Rafa Nadal described the conditions as “very, very tough” before adding “It’s not nice to see players suffering like that”.

The heat hasn’t affected either Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, who have both progressed to the women’s Australian Open final. The players, who are positioned 1st and 2nd in the WTA rankings, are both aiming to win their first ever Grand Slam title.
