Spain travel to Malta to continue their European Championship qualifying campaign and will be confident of taking all three points.

Predictions

Malta have not had a positive result for quite a while now and will not be relishing the visit of the three times European Championship winners. Malta actually failed to win a single game last season and finished bottom of their Nations League group behind the Faroe Islands, Azerbaijan and Kosovo

Spain somehow failed to win their Nations League group after losing their final two games against England and Croatia – and ended up finishing second. That was after a chaotic World Cup in which head coach Julen Lopetegui was dismissed on the eve of the tournament.

The bookies will not be giving Malta a chance in this match and it is very likely that head coach Ray Farrugia will look to the games against the Faroe Islands as a chance to record some much needed morale-boosting victories.

The betting sites will have Spain as favourites to qualify from this European Championship qualifying group but there are a few tricky games against Sweden, Norway and Romania to come. So, head coach Luis Enrique will know that three points against Malta is absolutely vital. This should not be a problem for Spain who could win this 4-0.

Betting Tips

Total goals over 4.5

It is difficult to find much value in such a potentially one sided match so bettors should look to the goals markets for any decent looking wagers. If Spain get into their stride early in Malta they could rack up a big score.

Both teams to score

Malta do not tend to score many goals at the best of times so it is unlikely that they will change that trend against a team as talented as Spain. There are rarely games in international football that are so one-sided these days but it seems almost inconceivable that Spain will not win this – and they should be able to keep a clean sheet in the process.

Statistics

Head to Head

Spain have beaten Malta on all six occasions they have met – scoring 28 goals to Malta’s three.

Stats

  • Spain have won two of the last three European Championships – but were knocked out of the tournament in 2016 by Italy in the round of 16.
  • Malta’s heaviest defeat in international football came against Spain in Seville in 1983 when the hosts ran out 12-1 winners.
  • The vast majority of the Spain squad for the two games against Norway and Malta play their club football in Spain. Only David De Gea, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Juan Bernat play in other countries.
  • Malta captain Michael Mifsud has made the most appearances and holds the record for most goals scored – an achievement that is unlikely to be beaten any time soon.
