Los Angeles Rams Vs Oakland Raiders Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips
Monday, September 10, 10:20pm Eastern Time
Oakland Alameda Coliseum
Chucky makes his return to the NFL sideline after a 10 year hiatus, as his Oakland Raiders face off against a Super Bowl favorite, the Los Angeles Rams.
Jon Gruden returns to his old stomping grounds as the Oakland Raiders’ head coach. Gruden has made a plethora of questionable roster moves in his few months back on the job. He has constantly opted for experience (players over the hill?) over youth. This all came to a head a week ago when Oakland traded away all-pro Khalil Mack. Even with a questionable roster and major holes in the defense, the Raiders still have Derek Carr under center. Carr should keep the game interesting, look for him to work over the middle and attack the Rams linebackers in the passing game, who are the biggest question mark on a rather stellar defense.
It’s Super Bowl or bust for the Los Angeles Rams, and they get what many believe to be a fairly easy opening game. Oakland’s defense is riddled with question marks, a unit that ranked in the 20’s in total and passing defense, and they seem to have only gotten worse. Reigning Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley should have his way in the passing game when matching up with Oakland’s linebackers, especially a 35-year-old Derrick Johnson.
The loss of Khalil Mack, and no other dominant pass rushed insight, should allow Jared Goff time to pick apart a just as questionable secondary. Look for coach McVay to dial up plays to get his new toy, Brandin Cooks involved, likely on deep routes attacking safeties such as journey man Marcus Gilchrist and 34 year old Reggie Nelson. LA should light up the scoreboard on Monday night.
Score prediction: Rams win 31-24
Expect to the Rams to come out and make a statement, putting the rest of the league on notice. While Oakland will be able to get some yardage over the middle (with the likes of Amari Cooper, Jared Cook, and Jalen Richard), there is just too much talent in LA for Oakland to hang around with them.
As much hate as Gruden has endured over these last few months, he does know offense. The addition of Jordy Nelson as a deep threat should allow Amari Cooper to do more work out of the slot. Getting Cooper on LA’s linebackers will result in chunk plays for Oakland.
The Rams averaged nearly 30 PPG a year ago, and all they did was add a 3-time 1,000-yard speedster in Brandin Cooks. Goff has an abundant amount of weapons at his disposal and will beat up on the inept talent on Oakland’s defense.
Head to Head
The last 5 meetings have been fairly even with the Rams holding a slight 3-2 edge over Oakland.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of LA’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone over in 7 of LA’s last 8 road games.
- LA lead the NFL with 29.9 PPG in 2017.
- LA Todd Gurley ranked 2nd in rushing yards (1305) and 1st in rushing touchdowns in the NFL for 2017.
- Besides Bruce Irvin (8 sacks) no returning defender from 2017 had more than 1 sack a season ago.
