LA Chargers at KC Chiefs Week 15: Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips
Thursday, December 13th 8:20 PM (ET),
The Chargers and Chiefs will battle it out on Thursday night for AFC West supremacy, and ultimately the edge for the 1st seed in the playoffs.
The Chiefs now sit at 11-2 on the season thanks to a hard fought victory over the Ravens a week ago. In a game that looked to be going into overtime, Justin Houston came up with a strip sack on Lamar Jackson in the final seconds of the game, to help set his team up with a game winning field goal. Yet it wasn’t all smiles leaving last win, as the team was riddled with injuries. Tyreek Hill, the team’s biggest playmaker, is suffering from both heel and wrist injuries, and has not made it through a whole practice this week. On top of Hill’s status being up in the air, the Chiefs will likely be without running back Spencer Ware, who totalled 129 yards in last week’s victory, as well as guard Cam Erving, and receiver Sammy Watkins.
The Chiefs aren’t the only ones feeling the repercussions of a long and gruelling NFL season. Running back Melvin Gordon, who has missed both of the past two games, returned to practice on a limited basis on Tuesday, and is listed as questionable for this week’s game. Gordon will be truly needed this week, as his backup Austin Ekeler has already been ruled out with a neck injury. If Gordon is good to go on Thursday night, he will likely find success as he faces off against the league’s 25th ranked defense against the run. Gordon was brilliant this season up until his injury, averaging 5.2 ypc and totalling 13 touchdowns.
The Chiefs get a big bump in their secondary this week, as all-pro safety Eric Berry will make his 2018 debut after injuring his Achilles way back in week 1 of 2017. It is uncertain if we will see the same Eric Berry that we have grown to know over the past year come Thursday. This, combined with the fact that Kansas City has been miserable on the defensive side of the ball this season, gives Los Angeles the edge when on offense. The Chargers are one of the league’s most well rounded teams, as they rank top eight in both total offense and defense on the season. The Chiefs will all but certainly be without a handful of their top playmakers this week, and without a defense to lean on, they will likely be on the losing end come Thursday night.
Score prediction: Chargers win 28-27
The Chargers have a great shot at winning this game outright, getting points is just an added bonus. The Bolts have one of the few defenses in the league that may be able to at least tame Pat Mahomes’ output. Their stout defensive front, and elite secondary defenders, will give Mahomes all he can handle, especially with KC dealing with injuries to their skill positions.
Two out of the top six offenses in football face off in this one. The Chiefs average 36+ ppg on the season, yet their defense doesn’t leave them with much room for mistake, as they surrender 27 ppg. They are coming off a game where they allowed 24 points to the Lamar Jackson-led Ravens. No offense to Jackson, but Philip Rivers is on another level.
