Predictions & Betting Tips

Anthony Smith has proven to be a phenomenon since stepping up to light heavyweight, but this is the biggest challenge of the 30-year-old’s career. “Lionheart” will need every ounce of strength, courage and ferocity he can muster against one of the best fighters in UFC history, Jon Jones.

Smith has won six of his last seven fights, finishing big name opponents since stepping up to the 205lbs division in his last three – Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua and Volkan Oezdemir. Lionheart is up to #3 in the light heavyweight rankings, but comes up against the most successful fighter in the division’s history.

Jonny “Bones” Jones made his latest comeback at UFC 232 towards the end of December, beating Alexander Gustafsson by TKO in the third round of their bout for the vacant title. Hopefully this weekend’s fight won’t have to be moved at short notice like that one, but either way Jones is the huge favourite with the popular betting sites.

Despite being the same height and weight, Jones comes into this fight with an incredible 8.4in reach advantage. That could be crucial, as Bones is the master of keeping his opponents at bay with little pawing jabs that often pave the way for nasty kicks to the legs, body and head.

Smith needs to get inside as quickly as possible, and whether he has the belief in his own abilities is going to be key in this fight. Lionheart is no novice, with 44 fights under his belt, and he’ll know he needs to negate that reach advantage by being as aggressive as he can. Takedowns won’t be easy for him though, while Jones is one of the masters of both taking down his opponents and keeping himself upright when he needs to.

Bones carries just as much threat fighting inside as at range or on the ground, which brings his devastating knees into play. Jones has an awesome, unorthodox array on striking weaponry, which is one of the reasons why Smith starts as such a long shot with a range of sports bookies. Another punt would be Lionheart making it four straight light heavyweight wins inside the distance, but Jones is a much safer choice.
