Predictions | Betting Tips | Statistics

Just three nights after travelling to Manitoba to take on the Winnipeg Jets, the Toronto Maple Leafs host their Canadian rivals in a crucial Saturday night showdown. It does not get any easier for them after that either, as the Calgary Flames come to town for another big game on Monday night at Scotiabank Arena.

Predictions

Despite being held off the scoresheet for the first time all season by the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been in sensational form to kick off the campaign. In his third season Auston Matthews has taken the league by storm, becoming just the fifth player in Leafs’ franchise history to record multiple points in each of the Maple Leafs’ first seven games of the season- a streak the Penguins proudly ended.

Although they were shut out by the Penguins and lost to the St. Louis Blues two nights later, don’t expect that to be the case very often with Matthews and company. John Tavares, Mitchell Marner, and Morgan Rielly have all reached the double-digit point mark already and should continue to put up serious numbers against both the Jets and Flames with the team’s lethal powerplay.

After winning their first game on the road, the Winnipeg Jets lost by a combined total of 8-1 in their next two contests away from Bell MTS Place. While Toronto will play the Jets twice consecutively, Winnipeg is forced to travel to Detroit on Friday night for a big game against the Red Wings before taking on Toronto again a night later. As a result, we will likely see Jets’ backup netminder Laurent Brossoit as Connor Hellebuyck usually doesn’t play both games of a back-to-back.

The Flames will be making the cross-country trip to play the Maple Leafs, just two days after playing the defending Stanley Cup Champions the Washington Capitals. Calgary has looked deeper than most had anticipated heading into the season, with newcomer Derek Ryan fitting in nicely with his new squad. While Johnny Gaudreau impressed last year with 84 points, the Flames had little secondary scoring which was their ultimate downfall. That issue seems to have been resolved this year though and they will need help from their entire bench against the Maple Leafs.

Betting Tips

  • Toronto Maple Leafs vs Winnipeg Jets: Total goals over 6

This is a matchup featuring two of the league’s most high powered offences, and with Brossolt likely to get the start for Winnipeg we could see the Leafs put up a touchdown in this one.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs vs Calgary Flames: Leafs to win in regulation

The first three losses of the season for the Leafs have come on home ice, but they will like their chances of getting the job done against a side not as nearly talented as them.

Statistics
