What are Decimal Odds?

Decimal odds are a way of listing the betting prices that is commonly used in Europe and are probably the most straightforward method. They are portrayed as two figures separated by a decimal point.

How to Calculate Winnings with Decimal Odds

Decimal odds are also the easiest for working out potential winnings. You just need to multiply the odds by your stake.

For example, Manchester City might be priced at 3.00 to win the English Premier League. If you bet $10 on that outcome – and City win – you would get $30.

Stake ($10) x Odds (3.00) = Winnings ($30.00)

Unlike fractional odds your calculated returns include the original stake.

How to Convert Decimal Odds to Fractional Odds

Most betting sites have their own decimal odds calculator but it is easy to convert to fractional.

You just subtract 1.00 from the decimal odds, convert to a fraction and then simplify that fraction as far as you can.

With the earlier example the odds of 3.00 would become 2/1.

3.00 – 1 = 2.00 = 2/1

Here is a handy conversion table covering some of the most popular betting odds.

1.50 = 1/2
2.00 = 1/1
3.00 = 2/1
4.00 = 3/1
5.00 = 4/1
6.00 = 5/1
11.00 = 10/1
26.00 = 25/1
51.00 = 50/1
101.00 = 100/1

How to Convert Decimal Odds to American Odds

A lot of the time in Canada bettors will be used to seeing American odds. But the conversion formula here is straightforward too.

If the BettingTop10 preview for Manchester City has the odds listed as 3.00 again, the American odds can be worked out by subtracting 1.00 and multiplying by 100.

3.00 – 1 = 2.00 x 100 = +200

For decimal odds under 2.00 the formula would be -100 divided by decimal odds – 1

Here’s the conversion table for decimal into American.

1.5 = -200
2.00 = +100
3.00 = +200
4.00 = +300
5.00 = +400
6.00 = +500
11.00 = +1000
26.00 = +2500
51.00 = +5000
101.00 = +10000

How to Calculate Sports Odds

Once you have had decimal odds explained it is easy to work out wagers and potential winnings.

In soccer a home-draw-away bet is popular. The odds will be listed for each eventuality and the winnings will be the number multiplied by your stake

Spurs

1.5

Draw

4.00

  Southampton

10.00

From a $10 bet you would receive $15 for Spurs (1.50 x 10), $40 for the draw (4.00 x 10) and $100 for a Southampton victory (10.00 x 10)

NBA points spread bets will list the teams, the spread and the odds.

LA Lakers -6.5 at 1.91 and Dallas Mavericks +6.5 1.91

Again, if your bet was successful you just need to multiply your stake by the odds.

Total points bets are a simple choice between over and under a set amount – but the potential returns are worked out the same way.

Moneyline bets on NFL games work exactly like the home-draw-away wagers in soccer. So the returns for a game might look like this:

LA Chargers

6.00

 Green Bay Packers

1.50

You would multiply the odds (6.00 or 1.50) by the stake to discover the winning payout.

The over/under wager is also popular in the NFL – and that is exactly the same as the totals bet we looked at for the NBA.
