Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest: Predictions, Betting Tips & Odds
Saturday 5 January 2019, 10:00 am
Chelsea begin their defence of the FA Cup by welcoming Championship side Forest to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea won the FA Cup last year with a solitary Eden Hazard penalty against Manchester United and will be confident of seeing off the challenge of Nottingham Forest in the third round. This is Maurizio Sarri’s first taste of the famous old competition but he is likely to pick a much-changed side for this match.
Forest fans were disappointed that what was looking like a promising EFL Cup run was surprisingly halted by Burton and will now be hoping for an upset at Stamford Bridge. League form has been up and down for the Reds this season so a good FA Cup run might be just the team needs to start 2019 off with a bang.
Chelsea have enjoyed this competition recently with four FA Cup final wins in the last ten seasons – and another runners up performance to add to that. Most sports betting sites will have Chelsea as clear favourites here – no matter what their line up ends up looking like – and Forest will do well to take their hosts back to Nottingham for a replay.
Forest managed a cup upset last season at this stage when they knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup – before going out to Hull City in the next round. Aitor Karanka will be hoping that his side can repeat that kind of performance at Stamford Bridge but this should end in a home victory – 3-1 to Chelsea.
- Both teams to score
Chelsea are likely to be fielding a changed side for the visit of Forest and – although they should still win – a defence that is not used to playing together may make enough mistakes for the visitors to get on the score sheet.
- Total goals over 3.5
These kinds of FA Cup matches are usually good for goals. The underdogs will be desperate to get some advantage early on – and the Premier League club’s class usually wins out in the end.

Head to Head
Chelsea thrashed Forest 5-1 in the EFL Cup last season and were victorious in the FA Cup the season before that. In fact, 1997 was the last time Forest beat Chelsea – when they were still in the Premier League.
- Chelsea have won the FA Cup on eight occasions – only Arsenal and Manchester United have picked up the famous trophy more than the West London club.
- Nottingham Forest have won the FA Cup twice. In 1898 they beat Derby County 3-1 and in 1959, Royston Dwight (cousin of Elton John) scored in their 2-1 win over Luton Town.
- Chelsea needed a replay and penalties to get past Championship side Norwich City in last season’s FA Cup third round.
- It’s been five seasons since Nottingham Forest have made it further than the fourth round of the FA Cup – that year they went out to Sheffield United in the fifth round.
