Chargers vs 49ers: Predictions, Odds and Betting Tips
Thursday, August 30th, 10:00pm Eastern Time
The Chargers will be traveling up the coast to wrap up their preseason in San Francisco vs. the 49ers.
With running back Jerick McKinnon dealing with injury, 9ers recently brought in veteran Alfred Morris as insurance. They probably didn’t expect him to work himself into a legitimate playing time for the regular season. So far he looks deserving. On 17 carries in week 3, Morris averaged nearly 5 yards per rush. Moving out wide, undrafted rookie receiver Richie James has been a revelation, leading the team in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Look for the 9ers to feature these two players to see if they are deserving of larger roles.
Geno Smith and Cardale Jones should get the majority of snaps for LA as they battle it out for the backup gig behind Phillip Rivers. While both have had their moments, especially Geno, the tandem have been way too mistake prone through the preseason, combining for 2 interceptions and being sacked 9 times.
Look for San Fran to grind it out with Morris on offense, and pressure LA into a few turnovers on their way to a victory.
While the Chargers have a Super Bowl contending roster, and will be resting the majority of it, the 9ers are still trying to find their core players. San Francisco will be all-in on Thursday night trying to find multiple running backs and receivers that can help them come game time week 1. For Los Angeles, Geno Smith is a QB who’s always struggled under pressure. Look for him to be forcing the big play in hopes of landing the backup job, which could lead to good things for the San Francisco defense and a victory for the 9ers.
The 9ers will put up some points as they have been prone to the big play this preseason. But no one is mistaking CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens for Joe Montana and Steve Young. Both teams have only eclipsed 17 points once this preseason with LA looking abysmal on offense a week ago putting up a grand total of 7 points.
Head to Head
For two teams that have such a close proximity to each other, they have only matched up 6 times in the regular season since 1997. The Chargers hold the upper hand winning 4 of them. The two did however meet in Super Bowl XXIX where the 9ers put a whipping on the then San Diego Chargers, 49-26.
