Portland is riding a four game win streak, and currently sitting a half game back from being the top seed in the West. In Los Angeles, the Lakers seemed to have finally figured it out, winning three in a row, and five of their last six.

Portland has been above average for years now, but they may be finally establishing themselves as true contenders in the West. Portland is currently sitting at 10-3 on the season, and coming off an impressive 100-94 victory against the almighty Boston Celtics over the weekend. Jusuf Nurkic had a monster game on the boards that night, reeling in 17 rebounds in 28 minutes. Nurkic has settled in as the third all-star worthy player in Portland’s impressive starting lineup, and developed into a walking double-double.

While the Blazers perch near the top of the West, the Lakers have begun their ascent up the ranks in the past week or so, sitting a mere game out of the 8th spot. LeBron has continued his usual excellence as a scorer, but in the last two games has taken a step back in the play-making department, which isn’t a bad thing. Point guard Lonzo Ball is coming off an 11 assist outing on Sunday. Allowing Ball to handle more true point guard duties keeps Bron fresh for crunch time, and uses his athleticism to run the wing.

The addition of Tyson Chandler has already paid dividends, as Chandler has made his presence known in his short time with the Lakers. Chandler has had eight or more rebounds in two of the three games he’s played, and totalled four blocks. Chandler will be important in containing Nurkic in the post. If Chandler is up for this tall task, leaving the rest of the Lakers’ long armed, length defenders to worry about guarding the arc and passing lanes, Los Angeles might just come away victorious.

Score prediction: Lakers win 123-121

Betting Tips

The Lakers are feeling good, they’ve won a few games in a row, they have LeBron, they’re posted up in sunny California, but the fact that they are favored is a bit of a head scratcher. Portland is one of the league’s elite teams at this point of the season. Nurkic has developed into a budding star as Portland’s third option. The reason for Nurkic being the third option? Portland’s backcourt comprises of two 20+ ppg scorers. The quickness of Damien Lillard specifically will cause fits for the slow-footed Lonzo Ball.

  • Over/Under 227 points: Take the OVER

Portland all-star point guard, Damien Lillard, averages 26 points per game, 8th most in the league, while LeBron ranks slightly above him in 7th, with 26.4 ppg.
