King Baudouin Stadium-Brussels
Belgium kick off their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a home match against Russia at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.
Belgium have been fancied for major tournament success for a while now but the ‘golden generation’ has always fallen short at the big stage. Qualification from Group I should not be too difficult for Roberto Martinez’ squad – they are favourites with the bookies – and Russia in the first match will be one of the biggest tests that they will face.
Russia enjoyed an incredible World Cup on home soil last summer – and followed that up with an impressive Nations League campaign that saw them finish second in their group to Sweden. Head coach Stanislav Cherchesov will believe that his side can go through as at least runners up from this group but a point in Belgium would be a very good result.
After reaching the semi finals of the World Cup in Russia, Belgium lost just one game in their Nations League group – to Switzerland 5-2. With many of the squad’s top players in fine form they should start off their qualifying campaign with three points ahead of the trip to Cyprus three days later where sports betting sites will have them as favourites.
Russia will consider this the last tricky game in the group before the trip to Scotland in September so will treat anything gained from the game as a bonus. With the honeymoon period from the World Cup well and truly behind them, it is down to the slog of European Championship qualification now. Belgium will want to start theirs off on a good foot though and could win this 2-0.
Belgium to win to nil
With Romelu Lukaku looking like he’s getting back to his best with his club side, Belgium will be looking to the Manchester United striker to get on the score sheet here.
Belgium to win 2-0
Belgium will want to start the campaign off in a positive manner and should have too much for the visitors.

- Although Russia have markedly improved since before the 2018 World Cup they have lost their last two games and conceded five goals in the process.
- Belgium were knocked out by Wales at the quarter final stage of the last European Championship and have only ever made it as far as the final once – when they lost to West Germany in 1980.
- Russia qualified for Euro 2016 by finishing runners up to Austria in their group – but disappointed at the tournament only picking up a solitary point.
