With the Australian Open the Grand Slam of the Asia-Pacific, Japan’s Naomi Osaka is attempting to win her ‘home’ Grand Slam tournament – can Czech Petra Kvitova deny her the opportunity?
At 28 years of age, who would have ever thought that Petra Kvitova could be seen as the veteran in a Grand Slam final?
However, that’s exactly what she will be as she takes on Japan’s Naomi Osaka who is bidding to win her second Grand Slam Final in-a-row, and become only the second person male-or-female to win her ‘home’ Asia-Pacific Grand Slam.
It will be a battle of explosive power games. At times, it seems if Naomi Osaka is channelling her hero, Serena Williams mixing powerful aggression with determined defence.
For her part, Petra Kvitova picks apart her opponents with ruthless placement and that big, kicking left-handed serve that pulls her opponents out of court. If Kvitova is to prevail, she must serve well.
The weather will play its part, and if more of Melbourne’s heat-wave conditions continue, then the roof will be closed and the air-conditioning turned on, which plays into Kvitova’s hands.
Whichever way it goes, it will be tight, but we fancy Kvitova’s big serve and her game management skills of manoeuvring opponents into positions in which they just don’t want to be in, will enable the tall Czech to prevail.
Kvitova to win her third Grand Slam title and her first since Wimbledon in 2014.
