This tie has been long overdue and fans are finally in for what could be a memorable Champions League tie.

Predictions

It’s quite staggering to think that despite these two sides being prominent features in the latter rounds of the Champions League this decade, neither have won it.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid did of course win the Europa League last season but it’s hardly a remedy for their two Champions League losses. Massimiliano Allegri has of course lost two finals as well, in 2015 and 2017.

One of these sides will of course extend their barren run whilst whoever emerges as the victor, has an excellent chance of winning the entire competition.

Los Rojiblancos have kept with their defensive identity this season, only conceding 17 goals in 23 La Liga games, the best record in Spain. However, their fifth best attack, with 33 goals, remains an eternal concern.

With the purchase of Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus completed the puzzle. They have long held the record of best defensive side in Italy and continue to do this season with 15 goals conceded in 23 games. However, this season has seen their attack take a leap thanks to the former Real Madrid star. They possess Serie A’s second best attack with 49 goals scored in 23 games.

The game is unlikely to be one that’ll satisfy the average football fan, but it’s going to be an incredible tactical battle decided by fine margins. Such a margin in this case could be Atleti’s home form – 1-0.

Betting Tips

  • Under 2.5 goals

This bet shouldn’t be too hard to explain. Simeone’s Atletico and Allegri’s Juventus have been arguably the two best defensive sides of this decade. As first legs are often cagey, this already defensive affair is going to have an extra dimension added to it. Goals feel incredibly unlikely and you can feel confident in taking money from the bookmakers with this one.

  • Atletico Madrid to win to nil

Simeone’s side are essentially impenetrable at home when it comes to European knockout games. Of course Juventus’ attack is nothing to scoff at, but Atleti’s defensive personnel combined with Simeone’s in-game tweaks are enough to shut out even the most potent of attacks.

Statistics

Head to Head

These two sides have only met twice previously, in the 2014-15 Champions League group stages. At the Estadio Vicente Calderon, Atleti emerged as victors thanks to a single Arda Turan goal whilst at the Allianz, it was a goalless draw.

Stats

  • No team allowed their opponents to have fewer shots in the group stages than Atletico Madrid’s 7.8 per game.
  • Juventus averaged the fourth most shots per game with 18.2.
  • Only German Conti and Rafael averaged more interceptions than Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis.
  • Bianconeri striker Paolo Dybala scored the third-joint most goals with five.
