With just eight games of the season to go Arsenal welcome Newcastle to the Emirates Stadium looking for three points in their push for a Champions League place.

A top four finish – and the chance to end the season above Tottenham – is still within Arsenal’s grasp and Unai Emery will be expecting three more points against Newcastle. The North London side are on a good run at the moment and have not lost since going down 3-1 to Manchester City at the start of February. Aaron Ramsey could be fit again and he could make the difference here.

Although Newcastle are still too close to the bottom three for Rafa Benitez’ liking it is looking as though they will escape a nerve-wracking relegation battle now – after struggling earlier in the season. Just one defeat in their last six Premier League games has made life a little easier at St James’ Park, but anything from this visit to London will be seen as a bonus.

Arsenal are still hoping for European success this season but may well see the Premier League as their best way of qualifying for next season’s Champions League after being drawn with Napoli in the Europa League quarter finals. This is a game that Arsenal needs to win if they are to finish in the top four.

Newcastle – like many in the bottom half of the table only have seven games left of the season – and still need five more points to reach the mythical 40 points safety mark. But bookies think teams will stay up with fewer than 40 this season and although Newcastle may give it a go, Arsenal should be too strong here and could run out 2-0 winners.

Betting Tips

Arsenal to win to nil

Outside the bottom three Newcastle have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season so Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno could keep a clean sheet in this one.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score first goal

When Arsenal play well there is usually a goal from their Gabon striker, who has scored four goals in his last five games.

Head to Head

Arsenal have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between these clubs – and won 2-1 at Newcastle earlier in the season.

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of four Premier League strikers on 17 goals this season – one behind Sergio Aguero.
  • Newcastle have scored over half of their Premier League goals since the turn of the year.
  • Even with Harry Kane attracting media plaudits for his goal haul this season, Arsenal have actually scored more than their bitter rivals – and only Liverpool and Manchester City have found the net on more occasions.
  • Newcastle have not performed well away from home this season – they have only beaten Burnley and Huddersfield on their travels.
