Predictions & Betting Tips
Talk about going into enemy territory. Jared Cannonier has taken on an absolute monster of a fight by going toe-to-toe with Brazilian legend Anderson Silva in his own backyard. Widely hailed as the greatest MMA fighter of all time, Silva may be in the twilight of his career, but that won’t matter one bit to the fans inside Rio de Janeiro’s packed out Jeunesse Arena.
Brazilian crowds are well known for being among the most raucous the UFC has to offer, and Cannonier will know that well by the time Bruce Buffer reads out his name in the early hours of Sunday morning. After losing three of his last five fights though, the 35-year-old had to come up with something special to reignite his time in the franchise, beyond dropping down a division.
However, despite those losses, Cannonier comes into this fight as the odds-on favourite with all of the top betting sites. He’s said how much he’s relishing the prospect of being the bad guy this weekend, and he comes into the contest on the back of a victory over David Branch in his middleweight debut at UFC 230.
Silva meanwhile has only won one of his last six fights, not including his no contest against Nick Diaz. “The Spider” lost a unanimous decision to Israel Adesanya in February, his first fight in two years that was also awarded fight of the night. It seems that class is permanent and the 44-year-old is looking to have his hand raised for the 35th time in MMA.
This is an intriguing match-up between the skilful Silva and the powerful Cannonier, who looked hugely impressive dropping down to middleweight. Cutting the pounds all the way down from heavyweight doesn’t look like it’s taken much, if anything, out of the Texan’s punches, and that could spell huge danger for Silva.
The former UFC middleweight champion will have to stay on his toes and use his famous movement and counter-striking, although the passage of time does nothing for his speed.
