New South Wales (NSW) has delivered a blow to Queensland Maroons (QLD) chances to win a 12th State of Origin series in the past 13 years in State of Origin Game 1 at the MCG to take a 1-0 lead in the 2018 State of Origin series.
After a controversial penalty to NSW where QLD winger Dane Gagai was penalised for dropping the ball when it was clearly raked out by NSW rookie Angus Crichton, the Blues scored three unanswered tries to fightback from 12-8 down mid-way through the second half to halt the Maroons’ momentum.
Tries to Mitchell, Trbojevic and Addo-Carr saw NSW take a 22-12 win that has provided the Blues an opportunity to win the series on home turf in Sydney for Game 2 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, June 24 2018.
James Tedesco was named man of the match and Queensland captain Greg Inglis’ game was quite simply inspirational, particularly in defence where he produced some monster and bone-crunching tackles on the unsuspecting NSW attackers.

Can QLD come back for Game 2?
QLD Maroons coach Kevin Walters was adamant after the match that the Queenslanders can come back to win in Game 2 to take the series to a home decider at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, QLD’s spiritual home ground;
“This time last year we were in a much worse place from a Queensland point of view,” Walters said.
“We will address this. There is not a real lot wrong with how we played. We came up against a very good side. Hats off to NSW but we didn’t play smart enough to get the victory.” Walters added.
