Saturday’s iconic Victoria Derby is the first of four days of fabulous-racing that starts the Melbourne Cup week. It’s followed by the Melbourne Cup on the following Tuesday, the VRC Oaks on ‘Ladies Day’ Thursday November 8, and the Mackinnon Stakes on the final Saturday on November 10.

The Victoria Derby is Australia-and-New Zealand’s best-test for 3-year-old stayers. Many of its winners have gone on to win the Caulfield & Melbourne Cup. The 2500m distance is the perfect examination of stamina for a spring three-year-old, making it the perfect start to assault on a Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup campaign as a young stayer.

The Victoria Derby is perfect for a young horse that doesn’t suit speed races like the Golden Slipper, and developing into a stayer capable of taking on the longer distances (where the real money is). Australian and New Zealand-bred horses have shared the wins over the internationals in the last few years.

Caulfield Classic winner Thinkin Big who could start in the Melbourne Cup, is the favourite at $2.90 . Aramayo is next at $6.50, who was excellent last Saturday in the Vase.

The winner of the Vase, Stars Of Carrum, knows how to win and is a great each way chance ($9.50), and Farooq ($14.00) rounds out our each way chances on the back of an an eye-catching run in the Geelong Classic.
