Spain welcome Sweden to the Santiago Bernabeu in what is probably a match up between the top two sides in a potentially tricky group.

Spain have started the qualifying campaign in a relatively conservative manner – with two narrow victories over Norway and Malta. But they will have played the Faroe Islands a few days before this fixture and will believe that they can go four out of four. The Swedes will be hard to break down however, so the home side’s midfield unit will need to be on top form.

Sweden are probably still getting over an incredible match against Norway on the last match day in the group. Trailing 2-0 with just 20 minutes to go, Janne Andersson’s team pulled it back to lead 3-2 in the 90th minute only for Norway to score in the seventh minute of stoppage time. A point away in Oslo might turn out to be a good result however and Sweden will not fear going to Madrid.

Spain will be regarded by the sports betting sites as one of the favourites for next year’s European Championships but they may find this group more difficult than many imagine. Both Norway and Romania are rapidly improving – and Sweden should be able to give Luis Enrique’s side a real test here.

Sweden are already assured of a play off spot thanks to their impressive Nations League campaign but will believe that they can qualify automatically from this group. The bookies agree but a positive result may be too much of an ask here – Spain should end up winning a tight match 2-1.

Betting Tips

Sweden should be able to contain Spain for large parts of this match but will probably end up conceding. An away goal would make things interesting though .

Spain are expected to win this relatively easily but Sweden have a good defensive unit.

Head to Head

These two sides have not met for over 10 years but Spain hold the slight advantage in the head to head with four wins to three.

  • Spain enjoyed a mostly positive 2018/19 season with just the two Nations League defeats to England and Croatia as disappointments.
  • The only time that Sweden have played in the Bernabeu was in 2007 when they lost 3-0 in a European Championship qualifying group match.
  • After winning back-to-back European Championships and a World Cup in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Spain have not progressed further than the round of 16 in a major tournament since.
  • Sweden have qualified for the last five European Championships but have only made it out of the group on one occasion.
