After a great start with the Pool Stages of Rugby World Cup Japan 2019, there’s been a plethora of upsets and surprise results. Whilst underdog wins are statistically less likely at the Quarter Final stage, how is to say that it’s not possible in the knockout rounds too?

Tip – England have been in great form, but Eddie Jones’ men are yet to been seriously tested at this World Cup. We’re certain Eddie would have loved the Typhoon-cancelled match against France to go ahead to toughen his team. The Aussies, on the other hand, had a tough workout against Wales and will be better for the experience, but England should have too much class and forward domination for the Wallabies.
BET NOW ON ENGLAND
Tip –In a match befitting a final, World Number 1 side before the World Cup began, Ireland, take on perennial favourites and two-time defending champion New Zealand. Ireland have been impressive so far, other than a slip up loss to Japan.
New Zealand keep on rolling on, playing with intent, discipline, flair and tenacious defence. Ireland appeared soft when threatened by Japan, a weakness the All Blacks could and should take advantage of.
BET NOW ON NEW ZEALAND
Tip – Renown for playing above their weight at World Cups, the French have the best record of any nation not to win a World Cup, so watch out for a potential upset here. The long odds available suggest that France are worth a punt.
Whilst winning all their pool matches, the Welsh were below their best. After almost letting a big lead slip against Australia, and a shoddy performance against Fiji, you can’t help but feel Wales will be back to their best in the knockout stage.
BET NOW ON WALES
Tip – Famous for upset 34-32 defeat of the Springboks at the 2015 World Cup, the bookies appear to have given the Cheery Blossoms little chance of repeating the dose this time around. The last time the two teams met (in a warm-up match to this World Cup), the Springboks accounted for Japan in a 41-7 win. However, in front of a packed home ground in Tokyo, it could be far different.
That said, some teams match up better than others against different opponents, and we fancy that South Africa should have Japan’s measure to end the home nation’s brave World Cup run.
BET NOW ON SOUTH AFRICA
England to win the match
England’s forward strength and scrummaging prowess should find them kicking their way to victory against an undisciplined Wallabies side that gives away too many penalties.
New Zealand to win the match
Ireland are not the what they were 15 months ago when defeating the All Blacks. New Zealand’s class should ultimately prove too much for tough to beat Irish unit.
Wales to win the match
Consistent and disciplined Wales should beat the unpredictable French flair.
South Africa to win the match
In what could be the most entertaining of the quarter finals, South Africa should outlast an enterprising Japanese side.
Japan’s Rugby World Cup comes down to this – England versus South Africa, and the winning nation will take home to William Webb Ellis trophy and winner’s bragging rights until the next World Cup in France in 2023.
