The first game of what could be a considerably long European journey starts for Inter Milan against Rapid Wien in the Europa League.
Fans of the Nerazzurri may be quick to scoff at playing in the Europa League, as so many have done before them but they enter Europe’s second tier competition as one of the favourites. Considering their current trophy doubt, they’d be foolish to ignore what is a golden opportunity.
Their opponents in the first round are Rapid Wien, who qualified from Group G in second place with ten points ahead of Rangers and Spartak Moscow but behind Villarreal. They advanced with a negative goal difference, averaging a goal a game but conceding nine in six matches.
The first legs of European matches are almost always cagey affairs but even more so when they’re the first of the knock-out stages. Whilst the home side will be apprehensive about staying in the tie for as long as possible, Inter will certainly be cautious not to give themselves a deficit to head back to the Giuseppe Meazza with.
This is likely to be a low scoring affair with both sides happy for the game to play out in the second leg. One key factor to watch out for is whether Inter can keep up with Dietmar Kuhbauer’s intense style of play, something which Spalletti’s side can often struggle with. All things considered, 1-1.
- Under 2.5 goals
Luciano Spalletti’s Inter have been in conservative form in recent weeks with under 2.5 goals scored in their last five games. This is likely to continue with a heavily rotated and cautious Inter side. Whilst the home side will be looking for a result, they’ll equally be looking to keep it tight in the first leg.
- Both teams to score
Whilst Inter have the player quality, Rapid Wien are certainly not to be brushed aside. This Nerazzurri defense have been shaky as of late and the Austrian side play with an incredible level of intensity in their pressing, which their opponents notoriously struggle with and bookies may struggle with pay-outs.
