Phillip Island 500 – V8 Supercars 2018 – Preview & Predictions

Phillip Island 500

by Ken Edwards, 11 April 2018

The reigning Supercars champ and an old fan favourite shared the big points in Tasmania.

Last weekend in Tassie, Holden’s immediate future in the category was unveiled (the V6 turbo engine project has been shelved indefinitely to ‘focus on what we have’), however, the past immediately came to mind.

It had been a long time between wins for fan favourite Craig Lowndes – almost 2 years since Race 17 of the 2016 season at Queensland Raceway.  However, ‘Lowndesy’ took us ‘Back-to-the-Future’ in Tasmania, taking his first podium of 2018 with second on Saturday, before winning on Sunday, converting his first pole position in almost 3 years for his 106th Supercars victory.

Jamie Whincup’s rock-solid performances with six consecutive podium finishes since Adelaide has the reigning Supercars champ with a 11-point series lead over Scott McLaughlin.

Looking forward to Phillip Island – 20-22 April 2018

The 2018 Phillip Island 500, 20-22 April, retains the longer race format first introduced in 2017, providing 500km of fast-paced racing thrills. After the shock results in Tasmania, the short trip north to Phillip Island will produce unpredictable racing. Both Scott McLaughlin and Shane Van Gisbergen will be looking to improve their 2018 Supercars Championship credentials after less-than-stellar-performances in Tasmania. Racing is bound to super tight and the marathon 500km event always evens out the racing, providing a level playing field.
