On a sunny April weekend, Victoria’s Phillip Island painted a pretty picture and provided the backdrop for some fantastic V8 Supercars racing. However, it didn’t turn out to be a great weekend for Holden’s Red Bull Racing team, where seven-time Supercars champ Jamie Whincup lost the series lead.

McLaughlin dominates at Phillip Island to snatch the series lead

It was a perfect weekend for Ford’s Scott McLaughlin, claiming consecutive victories at Phillip Island from two pole positions to re-establish himself at the top of the Supercars championship standings.

He didn’t have it all his own way and was made to fight for his twin victories losing his position during the round of pit-stops to Jamie Whincup on Saturday and to both Rick Kelly and David Reynolds on Sunday.

McLaughlin takes a 60-point lead in the standings with him to the next round at the Perth Supersprint. The speed of his Falcon FG X across the wide-open spaces of the Phillip Island circuit was a telling factor. With the track at the Barbagallo Raceway for the Perth Supersprint 4-6 May providing similar open racing, it is certain that Holden have work to do to catch McLaughlin and his flying Ford.

Looking forward to the Perth Supersprint – 4-6 May 2018

Given the Perth Supersprint offers similar wide-open spaces to Phillip Island in the shorter sprint format, look for Scott McLaughlin’s car speed to dominate and get in on the action for him to take out the Supercars Championship before the odds get too prohibitively short.
