The defending Asian Cup champions, Australia’s Socceroos take on the underdog crowd favourites and darlings of the last tournament in 2015, Palestine, in Dubai.

The Socceroos’ 1-0 loss to Jordan dramatically stripped away any possible pretence of Asian Cup favouritism from the defending champions, putting the spotlight of most of the betting sites on a team lacking pace, width, and a functioning vision. Put the deficiencies down to a change in long term coaches and a crippling injury toll. However, if they maintain possession at almost 80% as they did against Jordan, it’s only a matter-of-time until Australia wear down the Palestinians.

Darlings of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup in Australia, Palestine, are a much better than most people realise. Perhaps, it’s because the Palestinians officially are a team without a country, playing with a constant underdog mentality. Or more likely, as they proved holding a strong Syrian side to a 1-1 draw with 10 men for the final 22 minutes, they are a quality team that is extraordinarily well-organised and tough to break down.

The Aussies always struggle in the Middle East and they have a leaky defence, however, we expect them to triumph over Palestine, 2-1 on an afternoon of attacking football.

1 x 2 Odds

The Head-to-Head record of 3 Australian wins, 1 Draw and a solitary Palestinian win is irrelevant. The two sides have not met since 1939.

  • When it won the Asian Cup in 2015, Australia became the first national team ever to win continental honours on two different continents (Asia and Oceania).
  •  Following Tim Cahill’s retirement, Mark Milligan is the most experienced Australian player with 71 international caps to his credit, followed by Robbie Kruse on 68.
  • Massimo Luongo is the top scorer in the current Australian side with only 5 international goals to his name.
  • Palestine have a FIFA World Ranking of 99, compared to Australia’s 41.
  • Palestine don’t struggle to put the ball in the back of the net, scoring in 5 of their last 6 matches, Syria (1-1), Pakistan (2-1), China PR (1-1), Iran (1-1), Iraq (0-1), Kyrgyzstan (1-2).
