NRL 2023 Round 19

Round 19 of the NRL season will be the final round affected by State of Origin, with Game 3 of Queensland vs NSW set to take place next Wednesday. That means there will be just six games played, but with the ladder so tight there’s still plenty of pivotal matchups set to take place this weekend. It kicks off with a lopsided matchup between the Tigers and the Sharks on Thursday night, while the headline game will see the Eels take on the Warriors on Saturday evening. Take a look at our detailed match previews for all five games below.

Wests Tigers vs Cronulla Sharks

After a competitive period the Tigers have begun languishing over the past couple of weeks, and they truly reached rock bottom against the Cowboys last weekend. That was never going to be an easy game given the form of their opposition, but their fans could probably have expected better than conceding seven tries in 25 minutes prior to half-time. Six more in the second half gave the Cowboys an incredible 74-0 victory, one which unsurprisingly saw them tumble back to last on the NRL ladder. The Sharks, meanwhile, secured their second dominant victory in as many games, following up their 38-point shellacking of the Bulldogs with a 36-point win over the Dragons. The win saw them jump over the Storm into third place, though they’re still only in the top four on points difference and so need to keep winning. They shouldn’t have any problems doing that this weekend. The Tigers appear to be on the way to throwing in the towel for the season if they haven’t already, and the Sharks can capitalise on that with a third successive big win.

St. George Illawarra Dragons vs Canberra Raiders

The Tigers primary competition for the bottom spot on the ladder, the Dragons also appear to be set to limp towards the end of the season having notched up a second consecutive big loss last weekend. This one came against the Sharks, who smacked them around en route to a 52-16 win to make it 100 points conceded by the Dragons over the past fortnight. The Raiders, meanwhile, kept their extraordinary streak of close wins going, knocking off the Titans by four points. That makes it nine wins from their past 11 games with none of those wins coming by more than six points, and with their points difference over that 9-2 period well and truly in the negative with those two losses having come by 28 and 22 points. They are not as good as their 10-6 record suggests, but they also just keep winning, so who really knows what this team is capable of. They clearly have a capacity to lift when it’s needed most – nine close wins in succession is no accident, even if luck has played a role. This weekend, however, they should be able to break that hoodoo of close wins. Given the Raiders’ inability to win big it’s hard to see them knocking the Dragons out of the park, but they should get the job done relatively comfortably.

Parramatta Eels vs New Zealand Warriors

The Eels are starting to look pretty ominous heading into the last couple of weeks of the season. Their difficult start to the season is now a long way in the rear-view mirror, and while they’ve got a bit of work to do to catch the leading pack they’ve put themselves in a great position to not just play finals, but to work their way back into the top four. The Dolphins were no match for Parramatta’s humming offence last week, with a 48-20 win making it five wins in a row – and by an average of nearly 22 points no less. They’re certainly no lock to make it six in a row against the Warriors this weekend, though last week’s performance was a disappointing one for a New Zealand team which had won its last three games very comfortably. The Warriors were no match for the Rabbitohs, managing just six points en route to a 22-point defeat to take their record to 9-7 and put them just a game clear of both the surging Cowboys, and the Titans. A loss this weekend will likely see them fall out of the top eight, and with the way the Eels are playing they’ll be hard-pressed to avoid that. This should be a good game, but the Eels, even with a few big outs, can get the job done on their home turf.

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs

The Rabbitohs desperately needed a win heading into last Friday’s danger game against the Warriors, and they responded exactly like a side that is well and truly still in the Premiership hunt should. After conceding the first try in the 15th minute, they put the brakes on and didn’t concede another point for the rest of the match while managing 28 of their own. That victory arrested a two-game losing skid, jumped them back up into seventh and put them within just a game of the Sharks in third. This weekend, they get a great chance to get even closer to those coveted top four spots. The Bulldogs lost their fourth game in a row last weekend as they limp meekly into the final games of the season, and each of those losses has been worse than the last. A one-point defeat at the hands of the Roosters was followed by a 22-point loss to the Eels, before the Sharks beat them by 38 points two games ago. Last weekend was the culmination of a run of increasingly poor form. They were truly woeful, going down 66-0 against a Knights team which is hardly world beaters. If they play like that against the Rabbitohs they could honestly lose by triple figures. That probably won’t happen, but based on their recent form it’s hard to see anything but a big Rabbitohs win in this one, even with a number of Origin outs

Gold Coast Titans vs The Dolphins

The shortened Round 19 concludes with an interesting game between two teams on the edge of the eight in the Titans and the Dolphins. But while the Dolphins are dropping further away from the eight with every passing week, the Titans are putting their hands up as a legitimate – albeit still unlikely – finals candidate. They were the latest victim of the Raiders extraordinary run of close wins last weekend, but they were in that game up to their eyeballs after having beaten the Broncos the week prior and the Tigers easily in their game before that. They’re just a game outside the eight, though having already enjoyed two byes they are a couple of wins in arrears of the sides around them, so can’t afford to trip up too much in the run home. The Dolphins are just a game back, but they have now lost four in a row and it appears that their finals hopes – which seemed non-existent prior to the season, then very much on the cards a couple of months later – are starting to fade away, if they haven’t already. Both of these sides needs a win here to stay in the hunt, but it’s hard to see the Dolphins getting it given how they’ve played of late. The Titans, too, have been solid on their home turf this season, dropping just a couple of games there, and they can keep themselves in the finals hunt with a solid victory on Sunday afternoon.
