Germany vs Northern Ireland, Euro 2020, HDI-Arena

Germany welcome Northern Ireland for the final match day in Group C of Euro 2020 qualifying.

Our Betting Tips

Northern Ireland went into the November fixtures second in Group C of Euro 2020 qualifying behind the Netherlands due to their head to head record on 15 points. Northern Ireland were three behind in third had to beat both the Dutch and the Germans to have any chance of qualifying directly from the group. Germany could have wrapped up qualification with a win at home over Belarus on Saturday if the Irish fail to beat the Dutch.

GERMANY TO WIN BY A TWO GOAL MARGIN

Germany have been on an up and down run since they were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup group stage by South Korea, losing three and drawing four of their 14 games since then. A real low point coming in the UEFA Nations League when they finished bottom of the group behind rivals the Netherlands and France, meaning that they are no longer the impenetrable fortress they once were.

GERMANY TO WIN AND BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE

Northern Ireland could possibly have one eye on an upcoming UEFA Nations League playoff instead of this game, with Coach Michael O’Neill taking over at Championship side Stoke City this could be a farewell game for his veteran players, however, the IFA has confirmed that the tactician will guide his country through the playoffs in the spring should they go down that route.

MATCH TO END WITH OVER 3.5 GOALS

Germany will hope to sign off their qualifying campaign with a home win against a side that they have pushed aside quite easily in recent matches. Bayern Munich striker Serge Gnabry has ten goals in 11 internationals and will be hungry to add to that remarkable tally.

GAME TO END 3-1

Statistics

Head to Head

These sides last met in September earlier in the group where the Germans ran out 2-0 winners in Belfast. Germany have the better of the recent head to head winning 10 of the last 16 meetings between the teams, Northern Ireland have managed two wins during that period, while there have been four draws.

Stats

  • Germany lost their last home match 4-2 to the Netherlands in September, however prior to that defeat they hadn’t lost a home fixture in European Championship qualification since losing 3-0 to the Czech Rep 2007 which was a run of 13 games unbeaten.
  • Northern Ireland have only lost once away from home in the group stage, which was a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands in October, in a game which they were winning until two injury times goals sealed the win for the Dutch. Northern Ireland have only won 16 of their 58 games played on the road during European Championship qualification, drawing 13 others.
  • Germany have only lost three times in 51 games played at home during European Championship qualification, 1-0 to Northern Ireland, 3-0 to the Czechs and that 4-2 loss to the Dutch.
  • Northern Ireland beat Germany both home and away by a 1-0 score line in the qualifiers for the 1984 European Championship, however they have lost their last eight matches in a row against the Germans.

Our Prediction for Germany vs Northern Ireland

The match to end in a Germany win.

Germany could have sealed automatic qualification by the time this game comes around, as they have a home tie with Belarus prior to this fixture, while Northern Ireland host the Dutch in Belfast. Coach Joachim Low is without the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Marco Reus, Leroy Sane, and Julian Draxler who are all ruled out through injury.

Northern Ireland, on the other hand, must get something out of their home game against the Netherlands to keep their hopes of qualifying through the group stage alive. Michael O’Neill’s boys can, however, qualify through the UEFA Nations League route if they fail to beat both Germany and the Dutch.
