Monaco kick off their Champions League campaign with a visit from last season’s Europa League champions Atlético Madrid.

Predictions

If they needed any more incentive, the Champions League final is to be held at Atlético’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium this season and they will be looking to qualify top of a relatively tough group to give themselves the best chance of lifting the trophy in Madrid in June next year.

After reaching the Champions League semi final in 2017 Monaco have predictably fallen behind some of the rivals as their best players have moved on to bigger things. They failed to win a single game in the Champions League last season as they finished bottom of what seemed to be a winnable group.

Diego Simeone’s men have experienced a somewhat uninspiring start to the season and will hope that a confidence boosting victory in Monaco will kick start their campaign. Thomas Lemar will be returning to the club he left in the summer and his link up play with compatriot Antoine Griezmann could be the key for the Spanish side.

Monaco have once again had to deal with losing their best players over the summer and that has shown in their poor start to the Ligue 1 season. A lot rests on the shoulders of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao and if he can get an early goal that will give the side some confidence. Atlético just look too strong though and could win this one 2-0.

Betting Tips

It is difficult to see anything but an away win in this one and with the attacking talent at Atlético’s disposal it would not be surprising if they scored early and capitalised on that advantage later in the game.

Statistics

Head to Head

This is the first time that these two sides have ever faced each other.

Stats

  • Atlético Madrid have made it to the final on three occasions – twice in the last five seasons – but have been the losing side each time.
  • Monaco are playing in the Champions League for the fifth season in succession, having qualified every year after returning to top flight French football in 2013. Their only European Cup final was back in 2004 however, when they were defeated by Porto.
  • When Monaco won the French league in 2017 it was their first title in 17 years – and the first time anyone apart from Paris Saint-Germain had been victorious since 2012.
