Jose Mourinho’s men kick off a brand new season against Leicester with questions surrounding the squad.

Manchester United have endured a trying summer with Mourinho seemingly at odds with a number of his players, prompting questions about the stability of the squad. It has been reported that ‘the Special One’ has not been overly happy with the club’s transfer dealings in the close season but they have made some important additions and should surely have too much power for Leicester.

Paul Pogba may have won the World Cup for his country in July but his actions since then have not pleased Mourinho and it will be interesting to see if he is given a role here to take his mind off a potential move away from Old Trafford. Barcelona have been strongly linked to the midfielder.

Leicester City’s Claude Puel is one of the favourites in the sack race and will know some early poor performances will make his position very unstable. Losing his best player – Riyad Mahrez – will not help matters and he will be looking towards new signing James Maddison to orchestrate the Foxes’ attacking play from the centre of midfield and get the ball to Vardy in goal scoring areas.

United should be fairly confident of the three points in this opening fixture but if they play in the same style as last season it is unlikely that there will be many goals scored. Expect a narrow 1-0 victory for the Red Devils.

Betting Tips

Manchester United would seem to have goals everywhere you look in the side, whether it is from Lukaku, Sanchez or Rashford – or a whole host of other attacking stars. But under Mourinho United have not tended to score a lot of goals – their 68 last season was fewer than the other top four teams and sixth-placed Arsenal – so a low scoring win seems most likely.

Harry Maguire had an amazing World Cup and has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford ever since. He will be hoping that a new partnership with former United favourite Jonny Evans will be able to keep out the likes of Sanchez and Lukaku. United are also defensively strong so don’t expect many goals here.

Head to Head

These two sides met early on last season where United came out on top winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Rashford and Fellaini. The other meeting ended in a 2-2 draw with Maguire salvaging a point in the last minute. Leicester hasn’t actually beaten United since 2014 so the omens don’t look good for Puel’s men.

  • Manchester United have not won the Premier League since 2013 – when they won their 20th title. They finished 19 points behind rivals Manchester City last season.
  • Jamie Vardy is Leicester City’s all time leading Premier League goal scorer with 62. Riyad Mahrez was next in the list before his move to Manchester City.
  • Manchester United have played 1,000 games in the Premier League, scoring 1,924 goals.
  • United kept 19 clean sheets during the 2017-18 season – more than any other team in the Premier League.
