Lazio – Sevilla appears to be one of the more enticing Europa League matches from this round and may very well live up to the hype.
It’s rare that we see two sides of this standing come up against each other this early in the Europa League but Lazio v Sevilla could prove to be a cracking tie.
However, one key issue could be that both teams are involved in top four races in their respective leagues, meaning this tie could take a backseat.
Lazio qualified as the runners up in Group H with nine points and a slightly alarming goal difference of -2. Whilst Sevilla qualified as winners of Group J with 12 points and a whopping +12 goal difference with 18 goals scored.
In Serie A, Lazio’s home record is roughly in line with the rest of the top four hopefuls with 21 points from 12 games at the Stadio Olimpico.
Away games have been a thorn in the side of Sevilla for quite some time and this season is no different. Their away form ranks eighth in La Liga with 13 points from 12 games and three draws and losses in their last six games.
Assuming both sides take this tie with the utmost of competitiveness, the attacking talent should boil the game down to who can score more. Lazio boast the likes of Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto whilst Sevilla will field Wissam Ben Yedder and Ever Banega.
With the margins so tight, this game will likely be decided by Sevilla’s weak point – their away form. 2-1 Lazio.
- Over 2.5 goals
Somewhat of a ‘playing it safe’ bet but the statistics certainly back this one up. There’s been over 2.5 goals scored in seven of Lazio’s last eight Europa League games and six of Sevilla’s last seven. When two sides who love a goal-fest come together, a goal fest usually follows and losses for bookmakers.
- Both teams to score
The attacking talent combined with the defensive lapses that both teams are prone to means there should be goals aplenty in this tie, especially at the Stadio Olimpico, where Lazio’s last five games have seen 14 goals scored.
