After his failed attempt to become a two-weight world champion against Dustin Poirier, Max Holloway is aiming to reaffirm his dominance over the featherweight division against Frankie Edgar, who has two-weight title ambitions of his own.
Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway stakes a genuine claim to being the best featherweight in UFC history, and a victory over former lightweight champion Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar will only serve to back that up. Holloway may have lost his lightweight interim title bout to Poirier – who fought like a man possessed at UFC 236 in April – but the Hawaii native is a heavy odds-on favourite to retain his 145-pound crown in Edmonton this weekend.
FIGHT TO FINISH INSIDE THE DISTANCE
Blessed had won 13 fights in a row before his attempt at stepping up in weight, and he last tasted defeat in the featherweight ranks when he lost a decision to Conor McGregor back in 2013. Only 22 at that point, Holloway has carved out a place in history in the years since, with his relentless energy and pressing marking him out as a future Hall of Famer.
FIGHT TO FINISH BY KO OR TKO
The Answer has an incredibly tough night ahead of him, although he boasts supreme fitness for a 37-year-old. That helped the challenger to a decision victory over Cub Swanson in his last fight, which was also in April, although the New Jersey-born Edgar suffered a first-round KO at the hands of Brian Ortega the month before.
HOLLOWAY TO WIN BY KO OR TKO
Holloway meanwhile stopped Ortega in the fourth round in his last fight at 145 pounds, which came on the back of his pair of victories over former kingpin Jose Aldo – who beat Edgar in 2013 and 2016. With 10 of his 20 victories coming by way of knockout, Blessed is usually best and his incredible work rate means he never gives his opponent any time to settle. Edgar is a seasoned campaigner ranked as the #4 featherweight contender, and as an accomplished wrestler it would appear that taking this fight to the ground represents his only real chance of success.
EDGAR TO WIN BY SUBMISSION
Well on his way to greatness, it’s very difficult to see Holloway losing to Edgar this weekend. Blessed is a ferocious competitor with incredible striking and his relentless pressure is likely to be too much for his opponent. Edgar has to use his wrestling skills to stand any chance, but Holloway has excellent takedown defence and is the heavy favourite with all of the best betting sites to successfully defend his title at UFC 240.
Max Holloway to win the fight
Blessed has all the tools to see off yet another pretender to his featherweight throne. He has the big-fight experience, an accomplished skill set, ferocious intensity and the accuracy to go with it. This has the potential to be a very difficult night for Edgar who is a tough guy and can certainly mix it with two KO’s in his last six fights.
However, you only have to look at the opponents Holloway has beaten that Edgar’s lost to. The champ is running out of challengers, and while Edgar may be worth his shot, the odds are massively stacked against The Answer having a jolly night at Rogers Place.
