Predictions & Betting Tips

UFC flyweight champion Henry ‘The Messenger’ Cejudo is looking to become a simultaneous two-weight champ in Chicago this weekend. The 2008 Olympic gold medal winner is gunning for the bantamweight title relinquished by TJ Dillashaw, after the ‘The Snake’ tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in the aftermath of his defeat to Cejudo in their battle for flyweight gold at UFC 233.

With Dillashaw suspended and the likes of Cody Garbrandt and Dominick Cruz far from the top of their game, the bantamweight division is wide open. After blasting Dillashaw in 30 seconds, Cejudo now steps up to 135 pounds to stake his claim to the throne. Ranked #4 in the pound-for-pound standings, this is going to be a stern test for Cejudo against the man top of the current bantamweight rankings.

Indeed, Marlon ‘Magic’ Moraes starts as the odds-on favourite  with a selection of the best betting sites. The Brazilian is on a four-fight win streak, most recently avenging his only loss in his last 18 fights against compatriot Raphael Assuncao in early February. That defeat was his UFC bow, but he’s bounced back in style.

With a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and black pra jiad in Muay Thai, taller man Magic boasts a three-inch reach advantage over Cejudo. As the American won Olympic gold in wrestling, this fight could see plenty of grappling and time down on the canvas.

Cejudo has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the UFC, toppling the inaugural and long-time flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson in August of last year. The question in this fight is whether the 32-year-old has the power to really trouble the naturally bigger man, Moraes. Only two of Cejudo’s eight UFC victories have come by way of TKO, while Moraes has stopped his opponent in each of his last three fights – two by outright knockouts.

If this bout goes the distance, then Cejudo perhaps stands a better chance over five rounds of fast-paced action. The Brazilian is a heavy hitter at 135 pounds after dropping down from flyweight, and likes to stand and trade blows. Cejudo is likely to have to take him down to stand a chance this weekend.
