Brazil kick off the 2019 Copa America on home soil against Bolivia, looking to win their ninth South American continental title.

Brazil have had to change their plans after Neymar was ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury. But warm up victories over Qatar and Honduras will have given the hosts a huge confidence boost – and the Selecao will be expecting three wins out of three in their group, starting with Bolivia.

Bolivia are going through a tough time and have not won a match since they beat Myanmar in a friendly last October. But only suffering a 2-0 defeat against World Cup winners France will have given the squad some belief going into this Copa America. A result against the hosts may be too much of an ask, but head coach Eduardo Villegas will be looking to the other two games for a more realistic hope of picking up points.

The bookies have Brazil as favourites to win the competition – and the recent 7-0 thrashing of Honduras will only strengthen that belief. Losing Neymar is a massive blow but there is a school of thought that suggests that there will be more focus on the team as a whole now – and Brazil should be able to kick off their tournament with a convincing win here.

The sports betting sites have Bolivia as the rank outsiders to lift the Copa America trophy and this is probably the hardest start to the competition that they could have asked for. La Verde will be hoping to contain Brazil and possibly attack on the counter – but it is likely to be a long day for the Bolivian keeper and this one could end up 4-0 to the hosts.

Betting Tips

Even without Neymar Brazil should be far too strong for Bolivia in this Copa America opener.

It is difficult to find any attractive bets due to the gulf between these two sides.

Head to Head

Brazil have traditionally enjoyed this fixture – especially when it is not played at altitude in Brazil. Bolivia haven’t beaten the hosts since 2009.

  • In 30 matches against Bolivia, Brazil have only ever lost on five occasions – and have averaged over three goals a game.
  • Bolivia won a South America Championship in 1963 when it was held in the country. The last time they hosted the Copa America in 1997 they ended up losing to Brazil in the final.
  • Brazil have not won the Copa America since 2007 – and have not gone further than the quarter final stage since that tournament.
  • Bolivia’s best performance at a Copa America since their appearance in the final in 1997 was reaching the quarter finals in 2015. Every other year since then they have been eliminated in the first round.
