One of the top 2018 FIFA World Cup contenders, number 5 ranked Belgium, face Central American minnows, Panama, to open Group G action in Sochi’s Olympic Stadium.

The two teams have never previously met in a full international.

Belgium boast a star-studded line-up and its no small wonder that their odds to win the World Cup are so short at $11.00. Kompany, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku and friends are all superstars in their own right, as is the man attempting to gel them together as a unit, coach Roberto Martinez.

However, can Martinez gel Belgium’s leaky defence? It won’t matter here as they should be way too strong for Panama.

In a country better known for its boxing champions and baseball players, soccer muscles into the Panamanian sporting psyche as the country makes its first visit to the FIFA World Cup.

The Central Americans aren’t total unknowns. They qualified for the tournament in Russia by finishing ahead of the United States. To avoid embarrassing defeats, Panama’s Colombian coach Hernan Dario Gomez has been experimenting with using 5 defenders, something that appeared to be working for the team in the lead-up matches.

Preview & Predictions

Panama are the overwhelming $19.00 outsiders to win with Betstar.

Unfortunately, with Belgium being so tough and so strong on the ball they don’t offer any form of value at all to punters, sitting on odds of $1.12 to take the win.

You can see that a straight Belgian win is a pretty unattractive value option. If you believe Belgium will be putting the ball into Panama’s net on a regular basis, see the value in a bet on Belgium to score 3.5 goals or more at $2.75, or 2.5 goals or more at $1.73.

  • Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was only 16 years old when he debuted for Belgium in 2010.
  • Unbelievably, Lukaku’s team mate, Vincent Kompany debuted at the age of 17 in 2004.
  • Gabriel Gomez is Panama’s games record holder with 97.
  • Belgium’s Eden Hazard to be Player of the Tournament – $29.00
  • Group G to be the lowest scoring group – $11.00
