Australian Cup Race History

With prizemoney now increased to $1.5 million, the Australian Cup is the weight-for-age crown in the autumn for three-year-olds and upwards, and is the equivalent of the W.S. Cox Plate run during Melbourne’s Spring Carnival. The race brings together many of the same horses that ran in Melbourne in the spring.

The Australian Cup (run over 2000 metres) headlines a stellar Group 1 race-day at Australia’s leading track and other highlight races being run on the same day include the Newmarket Handicap, the VRC Sires and the Kewney and Blamey Stakes.

The Australian Cup has been won by many legends of Australian Horse Racing that have gone on to be become household names;

  • Makybe Diva – 2005
  • Northerly – 2001 & 2003
  • Lonhro – 2004
  • Ming Dynasty – 1978
  • Leilani – 1975
  • Veandercross – 1993
  • Vo Rogue – 1989 & 1990
  • Bonecrusher – 1987

Best Value Australian Cup Bets & Tips

Flemington’s 2000m start is situated on the right-hand side of the course, meaning barriers are of little importance in the big race. It is usually difficult to lead all the way, given the WFA conditions here and the long home straight.

Australia’s best online bookies agree that genuine stayers usually win the event with big kicks on the finishing straight;

  • Lloyd Williams stayer, The Taj Mahal looks sharp. May not win, but well worth a place bet at $5.00
  • Saturday’s return of Melbourne Cup runner-up charging home from 14th at the 400m to grab fourth Johannes Vermeer had plenty of punters excited. A place bet at $3.00
  • Best winning bets include; Avilius $2.20 is in great touch winning his last two races, as is Night Watch $8.00 , the major threat.
