It is hard to recall the last time an Australian captain went out to toss with the side having lost the last six games in a row. Skipper Aaron Finch would know that he has to steer the ship in one of the most trying phases of his country’s recent cricketing history. While the team may have overcome the whitewash in England and the recent loss in T20s against Pakistan Finch and his men would have to do more to earn the respect in eyes of their fans. Since the ball tampering scandal and ban imposed on Steven Smith and David Warner there have not been too many happy moments for Australian cricket. Finch would look to play aggressive cricket and go 1-0 up in upcoming game.

In batting Aaron Finch is the mainstay of the batting while his opening partner Travis Head will have to deal well with the South African pace battery. Chris Lynn, Marcus Stoinis and Shaun Marsh have to be rock solid in the middle order which they failed to do in England. This can offer Glenn Maxwell the perfect platform to launch his assault. When it comes to their bowling Mitchell Starc in company of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood would be the mainstays of this bowling line-up especially in a surface like Perth. Nathan Coulter-Nile will have to play the perfect supporting role for the fast bowlers to set up a win for the side.

South Africa

The South Africans have had an indifferent run of form in the ODIs this year. They started the year with a 1-5 loss against the Indians at home where they were made to struggle in their own conditions. The team comes to this series on the back of two series wins against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Skipper Faf du Plessis would have lot to worry about going into this game after big loss against Prime Minister’s XI in the warm-up game.  Many questions would have been raised about their batting and the skipper would have to find answers to these before the first ODI starts at Perth.

Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock form a formidable opening pair and will have to see off the new ball. With the team’s best batsmen Hashim Amla nursing an injury all eyes would be on Reeza Hendricks who has been inconsistent after his sensational hundred on debut. Skipper du Plessis will have to play the anchor’s role in the absence of JP Duminy when stroke makers David Miller, Farhaan Behardien and Dwaine Pretorius follow him in the batting order. Bowling wise the attack is top class with Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi forming the pace attack perhaps the best combination in the world. Imran Tahir will have to exploit whatever turn is available on a Perth wicket to restrict the follow of runs.

It is neck and neck between the two sides given Australia’s recent form but the hosts would still start as favourites to win this first ODI and go 1-0 up in the series.

Our Prediction for Australia vs South Africa

Australia will win the 1st ODI

The 5-Match ODI series between West Indies and hosts India is going through a roller coaster ride. When it all seemed that the West Indies were riding the momentum and had caused worries in the Indian camp the home side got into the demolishing act and won the 4th ODI by a record margin of 224 runs. Indian skipper Virat Kohli didn’t get to a hundred and proved that he is after all a human! With the West Indian having the arsenal to prevent another series defeat away from home and Indians just a game away from another ODI series win in their own backyard the fifth and final game at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram promises to be exciting. This would be the first ODI for this newly built stadium.
