Group D
Otkryie Arena – Moscow – Russia

Argentina face a tricky and tough opponent in the determined Iceland in Group D action in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018.

The two teams have never met before in a full international.

It is now or never for Argentina and their warm-up has been less-than-ideal (humbled by Spain 6-1). The greatest player alive, Lionel Messi, could win the World Cup off his own boot and its thanks to him for the last-gasp goals to qualify. Sergio Agüero is overdue to translate club form into international form. It’s a difficult group and Argentina will need to better than they were in qualifying and the lead-up to progress.

Iceland are bringing their Viking Clap to Russia! Iceland come into their debut World Cup match under no pressure at all. Nobody has any expectations on them and coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has told his players to have fun with this. That makes them a dangerous side for any team in the tournament. Recent wins over Finland, Ukraine, Kosovo and Turkey prove that. Make no mistake, Iceland are not in Russia to make up the numbers.

Preview & Predictions

It only stands to reason that Argentina are the $1.30 favourites to win with Betstar with Iceland drifting out of the betting picture at $10.00

If matches were played on paper, its clearly an Argentine win.

However, matches aren’t played on paper and it is clear that the bookies are looking at Argentina’s past form, not recent results when framing the odds.

For those wanting to extract more betting value from this match, you could do a lot worse than taking Iceland to restrict Argentina to at least under 1.5 goals at $2.75 or under 2.5 goals at $1.62.

  • Iceland is the smallest nation in terms of population to ever qualify for a World Cup.
  • More than 12% of Iceland’s population is expected to travel to Russia to support their team!
  • Lionel Messi is Argentina all-time leading goal scorer with 61 from 123 matches.
  • Argentina to win the World Cup – $10.00
  • Iceland hold Argentina scoreless – $12.00
