Bankers Life Fieldhouse
Two top-five Eastern Conference teams, and two of the brightest young rosters in the NBA, face off Wednesday night.
The 76ers have impressed throughout most of the early part of the season. They are, however, coming off a complete beat down at the hands of the underwhelming Brooklyn Nets. When playing at home (6-0) the ‘6ers may be the best team in basketball, the problem is, not every game is at home. Philly is winless (0-5) when playing on the road this season, and has been defeated by an average of over 15 points in those losses.
The ‘6ers aren’t the only one coming off a loss. Indiana was dropped by the Houston Rockets on Monday night, to the tune of 98-94. Still, as the 3rd ranked team in the East, Indiana will impose a multitude of matchup issues for the Philadelphia 76ers and their 19th ranked defense. Victor Oladipo continues his upward trend towards legitimate superstardom. Oladipo went toe-to-toe with reigning MVP James Harden the other night, and hasn’t scored under 20 points in a game since opening day.
The game will likely come down to defense. Philly’s issues on that side of the court have already been documented. While Embiid will man the post for the ‘6ers, Philly lacks the defensive prowess on the wing to stay with the likes of Oladipo, and Tyreke Evans. Indiana, on the other hand, is one of the league’s best when it comes to defense, ranking 3rd in the NBA in ppg, and 6th in opponents FG%. We all know Ben Simmons can’t shoot the three, but he may also see his struggles getting to the rim on Wednesday night.
Score prediction: Pacers win 106-103
- Philadelphia 76ers at Indiana Pacers: Take Indiana Pacers (SU)
The Pacers have played up to their competition this year, knocking off teams such as the Celtics and the Spurs in recent weeks. Indiana has not lost consecutive games on the season, and is facing off with a team that is winless on the road. The Pacers will ride Victor Oladipo and his 23 ppg to a victory at home.
Joel Embiid is currently the second leading scorer in all of basketball with 28 ppg, Oladipo isn’t too far behind with 23. You would expect that formula to correlate to a high scoring affair, well, think again. No other second option for either team averages more than 17.9 ppg, and that’s JJ Reddick, a career 12.5 ppg scorer. Eliminate Reddick from the equation, and no other Pacer or ‘6er besides Embiid or Oladipo averages more than 13.9 ppg. Combine that with a stellar Indiana defense, and Embiid’s expertise guarding the post, and a low scoring game should ensue on Wednesday.
Head to Head
These two teams have faced off 175 times throughout the years, with Philly holding the edge 97-78. Indiana went 2-1 a season ago against the ‘6ers, and has won 12 of their last 14 matchups dating back to the 2013-2014 regular season.
